Hey all anyone given the sallee ss502 any consideration instead of buying a zz502 (partial engine) and adding all the options to finish it off? I was going to go the #12371204 zz502 route but the sallee ss502 looks about where i wanted to take it too anyway. I wonder if the options added are worth the added cost. all thoughts would be appreciated! Ralph

Ralph,

I have a Sallee Ultimate 502 that was purchased in 2002. The motor is awesome. It was my third crate engine. I too went thru the cost analysis.

The motor comes with a 454 crank used for two piece seals (Gen 6 block with 2 piece adapter) and is externally balanced. My motor is running in a ~3100lb 69 Camaro with a Tremec 5spd. Sallee drilled and tapped the block for the Z-bar.

There is yet only a few miles on it (car still in resto-mod process)but it was the best crate motor I have purchased to date.

The price was increased just after I placed my order. Not sure, if $11.9k is still worth it if thjat is the current cost. You can add or delete parts to the motor. If I had to do it again, I may have gone with a Dart Block and not the Gen6 or just gone with the ZZ502 and upgraded over time.

Initially, I ordered my less, carb and ignition but in the end took them all. You can send them your ingnition box (assuming it is a MSD) and carb and save some cash. They will dial everything in.

Salle provides a dyno sheet, video of the motor being dynoed, all aftermarket parts documentation and a total list of all parts used and their part numbers. The motors are well crated, engine warpped.

Again, out of 3 crate engines purchased, it was the best so far. Delivery was long though. Mine took about 11 weeks. On the plus side, they will take a deposit but usually do not charge you until just before the motor ships which at that time the motor needs to be paid in full.

I hope this helps.

Larry

If $11,900 is the price your just about in the ZZ-572 price range which has a lot of aftermarket parts, standard, so why not have the extra cubes? Or get a Scott Shafiroff street 540" for about $9000 and have a lot more grunt.

More on this guys, this is a complete motor carb to pan water pump to flywheel 625hp 600 ft.-lbs torque it also includes a complete msd ignition. Proform carb crane solid roller, crower rollers etc. I am asking lots of questions as the engine time is fast approaching and i can only afford to do it once, your input and time are greatly appreciated! I have two ZZ502's I bought from Sallee and the techs in the Speed Shop are very helpful. You could buy a ZZ motor & add to it over time as I am. Very happy w/ power for $$ spent. JOHN

Ralph,

$8500.00 sounds good including a flywheel or flexplate? If this comes with a flyhweel this is even a better deal.

My motor came in at 630hp and 628lb ft or torque. At the time the cost delta Vs. ZZ502 fully assembled (symantics, most likely :D ) was not as much as my motor price wise was ~$9800.00 less shipping. So, the SD deal at $8500.00 seems really good.

I had spoken with Heikemmian Racing, Beck Racing, Bill Mitchell and Scroggin Dickey etc. during my quest. If I knew about Sharinoff and their 540 for about $9k that might have had me. Furious Racing might be another place to look at.

Also, there are couple of guys on this website that are very helpful and seem to have good reputations as engine builders. You might want to do a serach and start there.

I agree Sallee has a good tech shop. Very informative and helpful at least from the few times I have spoken to them.
