Sunday was my first time out with my new to me 78 Malibu and it went pretty well. I've decided to quit full time racing my 71 Chevelle and just use it to cruise and nostalgia race.
Anyhow I managed an 11.50@115 off the trailer and goofing the 2-3 shift. Hard to get used to the Quarter Stick shifter but I'm getting it. Made it to the 4th round but over heated badly when the Moroso waterpump drive gave up, may be just a fuse but I haven't trouble shot it yet. I pulled out of staging without taking that run. I did get a best 60 ft of 1.51, mph 116 and et 11.29. I don't have the slips here to put them with the whole runs.
The motor is a 406 sbc,12.8:1,sportsman II heads cast crank w/5.7 rods and an unk. spec Ultradyne flat solid. Rear is a 9 in. w/4.56 and 9X28 ET Slicks. Stall is a very tight 4500 from a local shop.
My first 2 time trials the tach worked fine but the remainder of the day it pegged out and the shift light stayed on. Its an Autometer Monster tach. The previous owner had this happen as an intermittant problem with several tachs. The ignition system is a MSD6AL,MSD dist,2 step with an adjustable chip (couldn't get that to work either) and a Mallory coil. Sorry for the long post but I'd like to hear from anyone who may know the solution to my tach problem. I may remove the 2-step just to eliminate it as the cause but after an engine and tranny freshening this winter I'm installing a T-brake so the 2-step will have to stay. Thanks, Gary
