: help with cams
70cartruck Feb 23rd, 05, 11:48 AM i have been looking at the voodoo 262/268 to order. the only thing is i have sb chevy with headers,3.55 gears, performer rpm, 600 edelbrock carb. I dont think all get enough out of that cam with the stuff i have. I wanted to know if i would lose all my low end torque even though i have gears and turbo 350 trans. if i went up to the 268/276 cam. It requires a torque converter with 2400 stall, which i dont have. Will i be able to run that cam without the 2400 stall and get more performance with the stuff i have and still keep low end torque?
thanx
70cartruck Feb 23rd, 05, 12:53 PM Sorry to bother but i was wanting to order the cam soon, please help me out
thanx evan
greg_moreira Feb 23rd, 05, 2:29 PM The 262 sounds like the proper match of what you mentioned. However, you will need valvesprings to match it. The voodoo 256 is also up your alley and works with stock springs in most cases(quoted from holley.com in the section with voodoo camshafts). Whats your compression ratio? Thats a big factor. If we are talking about an 8.5:1 350, Id say 256 at the largest for sure. You get much bigger, and things will start to get sloppy. Harold would know best, but with your intake, carb, headers gears, and hopefully enough compression(who knows) the 262 is probably more up your alley out of those two. Also, if you ever made any changes, something like a good vortec head would bring the average 350 up to 9.5:1 compression or more due to the 64cc chambers, and those heads and that compression along with everything else you have would facilitate a swap to the voodoo 268. Thats probably a bit over the edge right now though.
70cartruck Feb 23rd, 05, 6:04 PM my compresion is 9 to 1 stock 1970 sb 350
70cartruck Feb 23rd, 05, 7:44 PM i just want to know if my gears will compensate for not having the torque converter. Basiclly, will i still have enough off the line torque, without the converter but with the gears instead.
thanx, by the way they are 3.55 in a turbo 350
Kevs68 Feb 23rd, 05, 8:34 PM I already went through this decision earlier with my 396. I was undecided between the 262 and 268 and will have about 9.5 compression and 3.42 gears with a 4 speed. Harold told me I would be happier with the 262 because of the gears and compression. With your comp and gears I would run the 262.
70cartruck Feb 23rd, 05, 8:49 PM how did the cam work out in your car, sound wise, performance wise and istallation (were you happy with it)
thanx
Kevs68 Feb 23rd, 05, 9:07 PM I haven't installed it yet but I'm probly going to have it ground on a 110 lsa instead of a 112 for a little more lope. I'm also going to run the lunati microlube lifters for a little extra insurance.
70cartruck Feb 23rd, 05, 9:33 PM where and how do you get the lsa changed, why do you want to change it. will it give you more performance, should i also have mine ground? Also are those the lifters that come with the cam?
Kevs68 Feb 23rd, 05, 10:27 PM You would have to call lunati to have it ground to a different lsa. When you tighten up the lsa to a 110 it will move the power range of the cam sooner and have a little more rougher idle. The 112 will idle a tad smoother and have a broader torque curve. I'm thinking about doing it because I like a rough idle and a little more low end torque. The microlube lifters arent the same ones that come with the cam. I havent called for the price yet so not sure how much everything would be. I'm rebuilding the motor now and if it costs more then I can afford then I'll run the 112 with microlube lifters.
