: 4 speed trans problems in 68 ss

Just bought a 68 ss. Previous owner said it had a pontiac 4 speed in it (he bought a new shifter and chevy linkage only to find this out and have to replace the linkage). Although I don't hear any syncro noise, the trans hangs between second and third and popped out of gear once on the test run. It has a hays racing clutch which seems smooth. I would like to believe it just needs adjusting. I've adjusted Ford 3 speeds on a mustang I restored but that's it for my expertise. Any thoughts, opinions or outright advice/help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Charles

a muncie is a muncie no matter what vehicle it came from. Same for a Saginaw. disconnect the linkage and insert a 1/4 drill bit in hole at the base of the shift lever. then reconnect the linkage making proper adjustments. if the tranny is ok then it should shift correctly.

Thanks for the quick followup. I'll get under it this weekend and start to line it up.

I just tried to line up the transmission linkage using the 1/4" drill bit and the only gear working now is reverse. Shifter will not move through the gate at all. After researching the trans, it appears to be a 1969 M20, possibly out of a camaro from the numbers I could decipher. I think the current linkage is wrong for this trans and is probably why it would not shift properly. The linkage pictured from trans that have numbers matching mine is basically straight for the two primary bars. I'm going to check this out tomorrow but welcome any other replies.

Thank you,

Charles
