Here is a video of our TC's own 66 283 (see . From the video and other reports, traction was key factor. An aquaintance from Texas was also in attendance. He has been 9.70's and has since added 100+ HP and is nowhere to be seen in the top 10.

Sorry to hear Ryan broke his motor. Ryan, you sure needed some more track time to sort the chassis out...power is there, but as many found, it aint no good without a dead hook all the way to the finish line.

Looks like ET's weren't anywhere as fast as many had predicted. I sure would like to hear what the entire field ran, not just the top 10?

I'm curious to know of thos who ran, how many actually ran ET's within a tenth or two of their claimed/submitted ET's?

Tough break for Ryan .I know he was trying to get on a dyno down there trying get the tune up right his practice times were off his best.

10secbu right on the y should publish actual to claimed times for the Top cars

Awesome ... great for the 66/67 stick crowd

The top dog was Robert Schmidt in a beautiful white '66/'67 BBC stick-shift Chevelle that averaged 9.40.

Nice pictures Jason. From looking at the weather channel i thought the races must have gotten rained out. Guess not, huh. The guy from Tulsa didn't do too badly i see. I couldn't get the video to play but the pictures were great.

I think they should have went for Cecil County MD.

There are probably several more strips that could have produced better times but the entry from Tulsa ran exactly what he did a few weeks ago at Noble, Ok. (9.85) The car that wasn't chosen was a small block vega that is much more of a street car and is driven everywhere. I don't know what it could have run under similar conditions but figure about 9.50s with the crappy gas that was provided. The vega has run 8.99 here but i don't know what size hit, or the gas used. Evidently everybody backed up the hit to a safe pump gas level. When these cars hit the juice hard they use RACE gas. Hope they list times and combinations plus give us some good photos.

Sorry Rapid Robert, I hadn't heard about the race at Mokan. I'll talk to my son when he gets back from Memphis and see.

MAT Rumor is that he threw a rod (or two?)...not sure if the crank is damaged.

CDN SS, The white Chevelle with the dark vinyl top is a '67. On a 1966 model the taillights were not wrapped around the rear fender but were small, oblong and located just below the trunk hatch. I'm an "oldtimer" and pretty familiar with all the mid 60s autos.

I guess the magazine people didn't want too many spectators so they ran the event before its posted time instead of on the posted rain dates. It was a long drive for nothing thanks to the infomation not given to anyone wanting to watch. Thanks Hot Rod.

Harold,

I'm right there with you. I took time off from my band on Saturday night so I could go to the event. I finished a gig on Friday night in southern Indiana, immediately drove to Kentucky to pick up my brother. At my brother's we searched for quite a while for updates on the event, of which there were none.

We did check the weather again, and the Hot Rod Magazine web site stated that the rain dates would be Sunday and Monday. Since the forecast was decent for Sunday, I figured we would at least get to see some cars on that day.

We left at 5am on Saturday, drove 5 hours to Memphis, and found a closed track. We couldn't contact anyone at the track's phone number, so we found the Comp Cams office, and there was no one there, either.

We ended up at a public library using a computer where we found out that the event had been run the night before! This was from an individual's posting on a chat board, and not from any official notice via Hot Rod.

Once my weekend was over with I'd travled over a thousand miles and seen no event. graemlins/sad.gif

Hot Rod posted info on the event on Sunday on the front page of their web site. In addition to event info, they added that they'd brought their "web crew" with them. Evidently the web crew didn't have the ability to post changes in scheduling on the magazine's own web site. graemlins/sad.gif

I'm really bummed that I missed it. Looks like it was EXACTLY what I was after. My brother certainly wasn't happy either.

Hey, just got back - 3 day drive home!

Ya, I kicked a rod, but at least I had a great time! I went the fastest mph of the event, lifted 4 times and was in third gear about 100 feet out and managed a 157mph...

I'm not kidding anyone, my car is NOT a bracket car with consistent 60 foots anytime, but i ran 1.38's on a ****ty track at home, I was just making a LOT more power down there due to the air (6000 feet to 100 feet!) plus they didn't prep the track on the friday because it was a last minute decision to run the cars a day early because of the weather forecast for the weekend. I took a bunch of timing out of the engine trying to get it to leave - left on 8 deg TOTAL timing ramped it up to 16 total over 2 seconds but it still completely killed the tires.

The engine failure was due to the excessive tirespin - kinda like hitting the nitrous in neutral - or like your prop coming out of the water. Probably stretched a rod bolt or two when I killed the tires and it let go under power at the big end. Damage isn't too major - didn't go into water. I'm too busy with work/family now to touch the car for a week, but I pulled the plugs and the tuneup was very safe - so the problem was RPM/spinning related not detonation...

Was it worth it? Hell ya! It was a great time and I met some great people. I also won hotrod's title "MOST OUT OF CONTROL CAR." (Serious)

I'll fix it up and start working on chassis - i need to fit a slightly taller tire in there for the power I'm making. Going 157 lifting off the throttle a few times clearly shows I was making the most power - too bad I didn't have any local tracks open prior to the event so I could do some chassis tuning prior to the event...

Todd,

The track was quite poor - I know that most were off several tenths from previous runs - one other thing, the street cruise was BRUTAL! My group took almost 2 hours to go 33 miles, and it was a very hot day, my truck said 33 deg C which is low 90's, plus humid, and I could have done the entire street cruise in 1st gear.

There were some very serious machines there - the times are not indicative of their potential - one of the quickest cars there was disqualified because the car got loose at the start line and he crossed the centerline.

Very few if any of the competitors took the event as a serious competition - it was a fun time and met some great people down there.

One thing I learned from the preparations for the event is that pump gas is nothing to worry about - I usually spiked my gas when I was going to use nitrous at the track, but after some tuning on 93 octane, I think that I will refrain from buying race gas again. I didn't have to detune my engine N/A to run on the fuel, and i can spray a lot of nitrous with no ill effects (I repeat, the rod failure was RPM/no load related LOL). I have the timing and fuel pressure very safe and I wouldn't have a problem running more than the 400+ hp I was spraying in the future. Just gotta take a bunch of timing out of it and it's fine! I'm going to find a tune on 91 octane when I get it back together because it's cheaper and more readily available at the pumps here.

Any coverage online yet? Buy the mag, eh?

I'm not worried about the damage - can't expect to make ~1500hp at the the crank spinning the tires and have it last 100,000 miles. LOL. Just part of racing. I'll probably run less camshaft and make it more of a driver this time around.

I was amazed how much harder it pulled at sea level - had it out on the street and it was an animal! I had to jet up from 96 holleys to maxjet 124's (106's holleys?) for the air - unbelievable. On the street cruise, when hotrod drive by in a minivan with a video crew, I gave them a show - it will kill the tires at 20mph in drive N/A. I hope my showing off gets on hotrod TV!

Ryan that all sounds awesome! Sorry to hear about the rod though :( But its great that u can travel that far, have a great time, blow a rod, and still come home with a smile. graemlins/beers.gif I look forward to seeing the coverage on tv and in the magazine. One of these days i gotta see your car in person. I just came back from Calgary lastnight/this morning. Everytime I'm up there, ur gone. haha. No worries. Have you considered any more thoughts to swapping the nitrous for a massive single turbo setup? Would be a bit easier on parts, and probably easier to control the power out of the hole. But either way is cool :D Good show on the 157 mph and potential for easy 160s.

Ryan you should bolt on a 275 drag radial and run psca radial class keep up the insanity!!

A procharger is what you need on that beast.

Nah, I'm still happy with nitrous. I have a very safe tuneup - I just have to use my msd 7531 to do a better job of protecting the engine from tirespin related death next time. Sad thing, all I would have had to do was put a slew rev limit less than terminal which I experienced there and it would have lasted a long time. I can shift it below 7000 and it is suprisingly easy on valvesprings with this camshaft.

Turbos are ok, maybe I'll eventually run one, but I haven't seen the limits with the nitrous yet. When I get it back together, mark my words - it will go 170 mph at 3900lbs on pump gas once I put some tire under it.
Gotta stretch the wheel openings a bit to fit a 31x14.5" ET Street (31x10.5W). I can fit the tire but it rubs on the front at top end. I only need to stretch it an inch.

Bill,

I'll try to be in winnipeg - what are the classes? Is there a small tire or "heavy" class?

I'll race against the tube chassis cars but I prefer to race against other street cars...

Talk about taking a knife to a gunfight, the silver and blue Camaro from Tulsa, Mel Graham, didn't have a bottle. #7 with no N2O. Not too bad but he will get spanked if he tries that locally as our strip will be refurbished soon and lots of bad cars come to these shootouts.
