Hi guys, I thought I'd post this in performance because heating and cooling doesnt get too much attention.

I'm in the market for an aluminum radiator for the new motor (small block, will have electric fan set up) in my 1966 Chevelle. I have found a nice 28x19 radiator with built in cooler that I am interested in, but I'm unsure if this will fit.

Can you guys tell me how big I can go for my '66? I would like a built in cooler, and an external (already have the TCI external). Any recommendations would be great too. Not too expensive though please.

Thanks,
Joe Phillips

I would recommend that you give Tim a call a Ron Davis Radiators in Arizona.

Check here:

You can see pictures of mine in the engine section of my website below. They do good work, and have complete fans, radiators, and shrouds as a kit. This is the one I have:

How is it in relation to your factory radiator?

Can you measure the old one?

Are you willing to drill some new holes in the support to make it work if it does fit?

I'm not sure if you really need that external if that aluminum one has an internal since they are already more efficient.

BTW...My tranny builder strongly recommended that you do now use the internal cooler in the radiator if you use an external cooler.

MFSR, That's the funny thing. I measured my stock radiator at 23.75 x 21.75! I can't find anything even close to that.

I am willing to drill for the radiator, but I'm afraid I wont beable to get the hood down with the taller radiator.

Why does you builder recommend not running both?

Thanks,

Oh, that 28" dimension is the height not the length?

Is the price that good that you need to buy that radiator or can you get a different one?

Hell, just plug the hole, turn it sideways and put a new neck on it where you want... :D

He says that a "good" tranny cooler will have no problem cooling down transmission oil. I think also the fact that air through the external will cool down the transmission where the 190° water in the radiator will not.

Are there a separate set of tubes that run through the fins on an internal set up. If there are I would think with that aluminum radiator it would be as efficient or more and then there are no extra parts and lines to worry about.

Bump

Does anyone have an exact size that they fit into their '66?
