I have a stock '78 350 sitting inside of the Chevelle. It has 1 5/8 primary headers that feed into a 3 inch collector.

I want to run 3 inch pipes from the collectors and have them dump under the rocker panels just before the front of the rear tires. I'm considering using the shorty Flowmaster mufflers with these 3 inch pipes. The name of the game here is earth shattering sound and better flow over the current 2.25 inch glasspack exaust.

Now I know the old saying "Bigger isn't always better" and a 3 inch dual exaust is an overkill for a stock 350 engine right?

Well considering Flowmasters are so restrictive as compared to other mufflers I'm wondering if this set up would flow the same as the same set up using 2.5 inch pipe with Dynomax Ultraflow bullets? (straight thru design) What do you think?

Also keep in mind this engine won't be stock much longer as a bigger cam, better flowing heads and aluminum intake are in the works! ;)

junkyarddog-i'm not sure which is the question.....are you wanting to know if you can route your exhaust that way or are you aking if 3" flowmaster's would flow about the same as a 2.5 and a better flowing muffler. so i'll try my best to answer.
1-you can route your exhaust that way....i have seen it done before and should be pretty easy.
2-i don't think that flowmasters are THAT restrictive. they may be more restrictive than other company's products, but i don't think the difference is big enough to say you need a 3" exhaust. a good rule of thumb is that 2.5" exhaust will last you up to 450 hp.
just my opinion(even though in the exhaust department i really can't talk because i run open headers, which at the strip actually made my car slower, but i like how loud it is!)

Thanx Jay. I was basicly asking about the comparison in the two exausts. I already knew it could be ran that way. BTW where in NC are you? I'm from Fayettenam.

Yeah that would be sweet. Except right now the Chevelle ain't up and going how I want it. Hope you wouldn't mind a small blocked S-10 tagging along. ;)

I have raced out at Fayetteville track before and have some videos of my runs. Have you checked out Rockingham dragway? It may be a bit farther away but from what I hear their track is much better prepped than Fayettevilles.

BTW I've been to Cary before. I have an ex that lives there. graemlins/sad.gif

junkyard dog- the sb'd s10 is cool....i wouldn't be driving the chevelle either....i would be driving the firebird. and yes, i have been to rockingham. never raced on it but saw some top fuelers and floppers as well as some pro stock dudes....it was a good time (i even saw grave digger the monster truck make a pass!) but its so far away that i would rather go to fayetnam. that sucks about your ex.
