I have a buddy that is in the process of restoring a 66 chevelle 2 door hard top but when he pulled the engine out the previous owner had torched holes in the front cross member about 2 inches round for what looks like exhaust pipe clearance and slots above the control arms for some strange reason and now he is wondering if he should just replace the whole frame but is having a hard time finding a Chevelle frame so I would like to know if anyone can tell me which frames are interchangeable for the 66 Chevelle. Thanks

If the frame is solid otherwise I would just patch it. Just my thoughts.

1964-1967 Chevelle Frames are a direct bolt in. 1964-1967 El Camino Frames as well as 1964-1967 Buick Olds and Pontiac A Bodies have to be shortened 4 inches behind the rear tires.

If you need a Frame to repair your frame, I have one for you.
PM me or e-mail if interested.

An El Camino frame would have to be shortened 3.27" behind the rear wheels, but would otherwise work. You'd need a transmission crossmember from an El Camino (or a convertible) since the Camino frame is boxed.

are the 2 door sedan and 4 door frames the same as the 2 door hard top?

Yes, 1964-1967 2 and 4 Door frames are the same. Station Wagon Frames are longer and need to be shortened behind the rear tires. An El Camino Frame will also need to be shortened as well. The El Camino Frame would probably be a better choice for replacing a Convertible Frame, because both El Camino frames and Convertible Frames are Boxed. You can install a Boxed Frame in a Hardtop, but it is overkill, unless you are installing a serious high horsepower motor.

No, the wheelbases of ALL 64-67 A-bodies are the same. As mentioned above, Chevelle wagon and El Caminos used a longer bit of frame between the rear axle and the rear bumper. Additionally, Pontiac, Buick and Olds used longer frames in the rear axle to rear bumper area, but the wheelbases were all the same, 115 inches.
In the 68-72 years Chevelles used two different wheelbases, 112 (coupes and convertibles) and 116 (wagons, 4-doors and El Caminos).
