blue66 Oct 14th, 07, 9:16 AM Well, the sun in the forecast was dark clouds all day, but it was a good day anyway. The track went away after dark. BUT...............I had an awesome day :D

Now for the fun!! We finally dropped the exhaust for the 1st time since the carb issiues have been straightened out. I did before with the old carb and saw almost nothing.....I knew this was not right based on what my crap exhaust consists of and the results I previously had with the 454.
The added power destroyed the 60fts. But if it would have hooked I would have been even more smiles than I was :D:D:D

boldm Oct 14th, 07, 9:28 AM Nice passes,
Looking at your numbers, with traction and correct convertor I would guess at your 60ft's improving to the mid to low 1.3 seconds....which of course, with the same conditions (air), puts you in the NINE'S.
10secBu Oct 14th, 07, 9:38 AM Congrats Brian! :hurray:
Excellent runs, and I bet there's more let in it.
Dave Kaveshan Oct 14th, 07, 10:05 AM Awesome runs and I believe there are definitely some nines waiting to happen. Congrats Brian

Harold Sutton Oct 14th, 07, 10:24 AM Brian, Great runs. I'd recommend Borla XR-1 mufflers. Picking up several MPH definately shows promise of better times from exhaust work. The MPH is coming up nicely. For sure some 10.0s or 9.90s ahead. What were the weather conditions? Where did you run these times? P.S..... A spool would help the traction and drop some rotating weight out of the rear end assy.
JIM Oct 14th, 07, 11:08 AM Very nice. What kind of exhaust are you running now??
blue66 Oct 14th, 07, 12:09 PM Thanks guys. The exhaust I have now is pipe bender bent 3" and old flowmasters. I think at the time they were called 30 series.....they are about 10yrs old.
The weather at nearest location I found @ approx. time of runs......Racine airport
3 PM Oct 13 temp: 57.9 (14.4) dew pt: 42.1 (5.6) baro: 30.04 (1017) W 8
I don't have a humidity from then.
We had no sun, dark gray clouds all day.
Raced at Union Grove, WI.

I had thought about cutting up my exhaust to make some quick collector extensions but figured I'd be wasting my time with the traction situation.
The second pass I really spun as you can see, and figured the collector ext. would make things even worse.
I wish I could find a recorded humidity % somewhere. In the AM I looked before we went and it was about 70% but that was 6hrs earlier in the day.
Guess I need some weather gauges too.

Ron454 Oct 14th, 07, 12:45 PM Nice job!
You are now making the power the engine is capable of!
Just shy of 133 is good for your car.
I doubt it has low 1.3's in it, but hight 1.3's for sure!
And it just might tickle the nines.
Ron
GotSpray Oct 14th, 07, 12:50 PM Very nice runs, get that traction for Christmas and next year you will see 9's!:D:hurray:
Wolfplace Oct 14th, 07, 12:58 PM Hey Brian,
That's great, congratulations :beers:
And thanks again for allowing us to help a little this past year or so with your toy it really is appreciated :)
You have some more pics of our new "baby" boy Nikko,,,,
BLT4FN Oct 14th, 07, 1:14 PM :thumbsup:. must be the time of year for everybody to run quicker just so we have something to talk about all winter :D;).
Congrats
vegadan Oct 14th, 07, 5:25 PM good job Brian,i think i need a big block for xmas
JOHN WILSON Oct 14th, 07, 7:41 PM Congrats, Brian! :beers: Very nice!
540Hotrod Oct 14th, 07, 9:40 PM Congratulations! That bad boy is coming around nicely!
Actually, I figured the exhaust might have cost you more...but 2 mph is impressive.

Stokerboats Oct 15th, 07, 12:46 AM Impressive performance!!!!!!!!!! Don't waste your money on the
Borla XR-1's. I have them on my chevelle and wish I'd bought a new pair of Dyno Max's instead. The performance is identical with both and the Borla's cost twice as much. They do sound different but that's all you get for twice the money and they have a funny screen running right down the middle of them. My exhaust run's all the way back and you've got me thinking about open headers now. The only problem is that here in California there aren't any tracks that don't cry about noise. Good job and there's more to come. If you can find mid to high 30's 60ft be happy.:hurray:
Ron454 Oct 15th, 07, 2:14 AM Do consider a Dr. Gas 3.5" X with the Magnaflows.
Magnaflows don't have fiberglass in them like the Dynomax.

Ron is your X 3.5" in and out or just in?
Also I have heard about some 3.5" mufflers that are only the flange size and are actually a 3" case inside......Anybody know what mufflers are true 3.5" or Is a 3" muffler enuf?
Hopefully I can get to the track again before the snow starts :(
1 more day at the track and my "junk" tires really will be junk.
Spring we will have some new shoes on the back ;)....and the front too.
Not sure if I should stick with the sportsmans or go to the et drag front to shed a little weight. It's nice to just swap the rears to go driving and not both. Guess I'll put some street tires on my 8" rims, and go with a true slick on new 10" rims, instead of playing the dot tire game. However the new Hoosier's are sounding real promising!

Very nice little puppy pics :D Nikko is growing quickly. Hopefully I can meet them someday:)
BTW, it may be a little to you, but your help is considerd by me to be HUGE. :beers:
cstraub Oct 15th, 07, 10:02 AM Brian that is AWSOME....Congrats. Your patience and hardwork keep paying off.
With the exhaust off how was throttle response then?

The car has great response, has a very distinct idle that was attracting many peoples attention.
At this point it's a real sleeper at the street drags considering the front tires want to stay on the ground LOL.
Anyway I also need to say thanks to Chris Straub and his "Straub" bumpstick. And also providing a bit of moral support through some of my tuning. :beers:
Brian
Here is the one time it hooked and ran the 1.45 60ft.

kjett Oct 15th, 07, 12:53 PM Brian,
I'm running a Dr. Gas 3.5" x-pipe into a pair of 3.5" Magnaflow stainless mufflers with turn downs. These are the large case Magnaflows (22" case and 28" overall length). These mufflers sound great behind my 540, atleast idling and whacking the gas. I haven't been able to drive the car yet due to my ADD condition :D Be advised, though, these mufflers are HEAVY!!!
lucky3 Oct 15th, 07, 4:44 PM Congrats brian.
67Mike Oct 16th, 07, 5:02 AM Congratulations on the great passes Brian!
Im very suprized how much mph you gained with the exhaust off. It will be interesting to see how it compairs to your new better flowing system next year.
Get those 28/10.5 Stiffwall MT slicks on a 10" rim and your 60 foots will improve for sure.
I better step it up for this next year. Your 496 is making my 540 look bad.

I ran the Dynomax Race Magnums for four years. I changed them only because they began to rust, not because they became too loud. The fiberglass arguement is moot.

Mike your car is also running very good.
Just remember who won the race last friday. You. But you do have me by 54 cubes. And you have a dominator :waving: (Hardly seems like a fair race to me)
Take care, Brian

Harold, has your son used anything else and seen a performance gain in the Borla's? I am researching exhaust and will check into all available options. My plan is to run 3.5", 3.5" x, and 3.5" mufflers. Might as well go big as long as I am doing it. Funny years ago I thought 3" was a huge exhaust. And we were trying to get 2.5" stuck under everything as an upgrade. Now were getting into 3.5-4" stuff.
Motorhead62 Oct 18th, 07, 1:00 AM Congrats Brian! :beers:
