On a 65 chevelle with factory width rear and an 8" rim, 5" backspace will center the wheel.

Agree with Dirtrocker. I ran 5.5" backspace with a 1/4" spacer which also worked with a 28x11.50 ET Street on a 65 Camino.

ok when you say center, you mean they will work? How about the front, what's that draw back on having such a thin front runner?

By centered I mean it will be equal distance from rubbing either in or out. If you want to cut or roll your fender lip, you might get a little more tire with a 1/4" spacer or a slightly diffrent offset.
Each car can be a little diffrent but as a rule this is where you want to be.
Downfall to front runners.........trying to make sharp turns :D

would you happend to know if a 8.5 or 9 inch width would fit on a stock chevelle?

U can put a later model 68-72 12 bolt in but they are wider and will change the offset of your wheels. 64-67 12 bolts are pricey. Think OPGI sells a bolt in 8.5 but they cost $1600
If I were going to spend that much, U can get a 9" housing set up to bolt in W/ moser axles and GM ends to accept your brakes for @ $900 which leaves you to find a center section and buy a yoke.
