I recently stripped my 72 of all of its crapped out wiring and venting. I am building my own dash with all new AutoMeter Phantoms and have everything lined up and accounted for except the funtioning of the fuel gauge and turn signal harness. My real question is does anybody out there have the color codes and diagrams of the original wiring. I wanted to go the Painless route, but finances prohibit that if I can make sense of it. The car needs to be street legal, so the turn signals are kind of important. I have the car running through switch panel and have running and head lights, and brake lights.

Okay, I remembered that the wiring codes are in my service manual.
Duh...
Still don't know how the fuel gauge works.

Robert, The fuel gauge works with a variable resistance to ground thru the fuel sender in the tank. Power is supplied to the guage with the key on. The range of resistance is from 0 ohms to 90 ohms with 0 being full and 90 empty. I'm going to do the same thing to my 64 this winter. i hope Santa brings me everything on my list.

Okay, so question B is:
if fuel gauge function, and accuracy, is based off ohms resistance, what type and length of wire (gauge and ohms per foot impedance) is required to make it work correctly?
or is there a predetermined amount of correction built in to most gauges to compensate for spliced wires or a gauge of wire that is not stock?
or
is this a problem that I am wasting my brain cells over because the tank will probably never reach empty anyway?

Don't read to far into it. Resistance in wires is negligable compared to 90 Ohms. For about 10 feet of 15 gauge wound wire the resistance is in the Micro Ohm range. i.e. cause for worry would be really long distances, like unessary bundled wire.
