: Anti-theft idea
Hughski Oct 13th, 07, 10:12 PM I was thinking about those of us with carports (and don't have the $$$ to build a garage) for our Chevelles and started tinkering around this idea.
Get a large, industrial, eye bolt that has an eye of about 1.5" and a shaft of about 6-7". Drill a .75-1" by 8' deep hole in the cement (4" thick??)right above where one of the frame horns would be when parked. Epoxy the bolt in the hole so only the eye is showing. Paint it orange so you "never" trip over it:D.
Buy one of these: http://www.kryptonitelock.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?cid=1000&scid=1002&pid=1169 .
Drape the chain over the frame horn and lock it to the eyebolt.
It would cost less than $150 to do this and would raise all sorts of noise if a towtruck was trying to pull it up onto it's flatbed. Yes, it would bend the car up, but at least you'd probably still have it.
What do you think? Crackpot or good idea? Suggestions to better this idea would be great, too!
furball8994 Oct 13th, 07, 10:21 PM I think its a good Idea. Anything that slows a thief down will make them think about looking for an easier target.
NOTE: Don't forget to unlock your car before backing out!!!
highlandlake Oct 13th, 07, 10:23 PM Just a thought. If someone were to try to steal it and get stopped by it's immobility, would they take out their frustration by then vandalizing it in place?
Otherwise I like the idea.

Myth busters tried to rip a rear end from a car based on what happened to the cop car in American Graffiti.
It proved to be nearly impossible.
In the end they did accomplish it but they had to remove most of the bolts that hold the rear in.

I've found prices ranging from $60 to over $100 depending on the length of chain. There are 2 sizes: 3'3" and 5'. I don't know which one will fit best as the car is in the shop. I'll have to wait until I get it back to measure. Hopefully the less expensive one will work and that will bring down my initial total price estimate!
BillyGman Oct 14th, 07, 3:46 AM Have you found any places that sell those online?
EDIT: nevermind. I just found a few places.

undee70ss Oct 14th, 07, 5:59 AM Although this doesn't prevent the car from being stolen, it makes it less attractive to theives. VIN Etching (http://www.etch-o-matic.biz/vin-etching.htm)
Big White Oct 14th, 07, 11:44 AM I suppose your idea has some merit from the peace of mind standpoint but a simple bolt cutter would quietly defeat it.

2cool Oct 14th, 07, 12:49 PM Years ago my boat at the time had a factory bolt lock kit that took special wrenches to get it off plus it had a chain around it going to the trailer and they still got it, the bolts were removed not cut!
I haven't worried about my 69 since I stripped it years ago, so just to make it tough on em I would put one on blocks and lock up the wheels.

It was still 2 different era of cars that they tested but I still doubt there would have been any different results.
