: Cam selection help for future 454

I would like to have a solid lift cam in my 454. I'm starting to get that down on paper to kind of 'finalize' my combo or at least how I think it will turn out unless something unexpected happens during machine shop time, so this may be slightly tentative, but I think at least this can get me started. Here are the specs which I believe I will be using:

468 CID

-781 heads with 118 chambers, 2.19/1.88 valves and minor bowl work and cleaning up of short turn radii.
Pistons will be forged SRPs with a 23cc dome which should bring me to about 10:1 static compression.
I am looking for a DCR about 8.0 to run 93 octane. I might could bump up an 8.2 DCR because I will be getting an aluminum radiator and my intake is aluminum, aluminum pistons, so that might help in that area slightly, if that extra .2 is needed.

Other specifics which with I have in mind (don't know if these are important or not):
Q-jet
Aluminum Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold
Stock rods with ARP bolts
4-bolt main with ARP main bolts
Muncie 5-speed (which will be M22 ratios)
4.10 posi rear
28'' tall tire
Accel HEI dist.
undetermined headers with a 3'' exhaust to Hooker Aero Chambers to 2.5'' tails.

What I'm mainly concerned with above all, #1 for safety, is being able to run power brakes. Other than that I'm looking for good lope and sound (which is why I want a solid), able to run a DCR to allow me to use 93 octane. This is a street car so I think a powerband of 2000-6000 RPM is just fine. I am planning, once the combo gets closer, to talk to UDHarold about one of his cams.

So, I'm wondering if anyone can make a suggestion? Like I said, I know things are tentative and just wanted to kind of see what options are, but I may be jumping the gun too quickly??

Thanks in advance!

To balance the kind of duration you'll want and the idle quality, I'd opt for something not more than 250 @.050, and more like 235/245@.050, approximately, and also would think a 112 LSA will help idle quality enough to warrant it, trading off some mid range pull. 110 LSA would be fine, 112 would be smoother at idle and in the very low rpm ranges.

Taylor,

FWIW, I am running a very similar set up. Forged Pistons 10:1 CR, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake and Heads, Holley 950HP, Roller Rockers, Hooker Super Comp 1.875 Primary Tubes through 3" W/H-Pipe & 40 Series Flowmasters, Richmond 5 Spd.
I'm running an Isky rr-620 Solid Roller, Duration of 248/248 @ .050 and .620/.620 Lift.

This Cams RPM range is 2800-6400 and I'll tell ya, it pulls real hard all the way through the power curve and has an incredible idle that sounds like "If you touch me I'll eat ya". In fact I get comments all the time of how good it sounds. It runs great on 93 pump gas. I do have a vacuum canister for my power brakes though but it's not a problem.

Any one else running this cam with great results ?

Cheers, Gaz
