I have a 1970 chevelle 396 with a turbo 400 tranny. I want to convert to a manual transmission. I am considering the tremec 5 speed instead of the muncie but am concerened of hurting the value of my car. It is not a matching numbers car but does have a 1970 engine. Any info will be helpfull.

If it's not a numbers matching car, you don't have anything to worry about. If the trans matches the car then keep it to include in a potential future sale of the car. At this point, the tremec can only add value to the car.

What gears do have in the rear???
My car with 4:10's was a drag to drive on the freeway with a M-21. I installed a TKO with 082 overdriven 5th gear and freeway cruises at 70mph or 80mph or 90mph...are wonderful  If you plan to race I would not go with the 082 as it is a big step up.

Agreed - figureout what you want to do with the car. If you need a 5th or OD gear then go with the 5 speed. If you are going to run it on the street or strip race it then go with the 4 speed.

The stock Muncie had it's issues from time to time behind some big blocks. If you feel a need to go that way, at least look into the super case. I don't know if they finally came out with overdrive gears for it or not, but I know some people were working on it.
The Tremec is not cheap, but it's a quality upgrade over a Muncie.
I had a guy recommend a GM truck tranny from the mid 80's as a cheaper option for an overdrive 4 speed tranny that is built stout. It's a more modern chevy version of the Mopar muscle car 4 speed trannies. GM trucks have been using this brand (now known as New Venture - although I think I heard of a recent company change?) trannies for years now. I had no problems finding the used bell housing and the standard Hurst shifter bolted right up. My car still is not yet on the road so until I get experience I won't say this is the right way to go ....yet.
Bottom line, if I didn't have this option I would have went Tremec if I could afford it.

Get the 5th gear. I had a SuperT-10 4 speed with 3.90 gears. It ramped up quick and I found myself looking for that missing gear! Look at the cost to go T-56 compared to the 5speed. I went to 6 from 4. It was much more for me but I needed to cover 1300Hp and I had to go T-56 along with major bucks to refit with 9310 Ni Alloy gears. You don't need to go that far if staying in the 600-700Hp range Max!
