: Where can I find one single piston?

The previous owner of the 396 I have dropped a carb stud into the intake. It found it's way into the #1 cylinder, mushroomed the piston and cracked the cylinder wall. The motor was fresh and in great condition otherwise.

The machine shop saved the original 396 block (whew!) with a new sleeve and would like to re-use the pistons, but I need one. It's an older Sealed Power 2312P forged .060" over 396 piston. It's an out-dated forging, no longer offered. I tried Johnson's Speed warehouse, but they only have a full set. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Note: The new Sealed Power pistons are VERY different. Much lighter. Won't work.

I know that money is not easy to come by. Having said that, I would buy a new, lighter set of pistons while it is apart. Have it rebalanced and put it back together.
Unless someone has that piston laying around somewhere, you might be out of luck....
Best of luck,
Smitty

Weigh it and see how much it is. It is the same piston as the TRW L2240F.

I have a bunch of L2240F .030's but not sure about .060. I'll take a look.

Thanks. Just to clarify: It's a 4.154 bore, early 396 with .060" over.(I belive the same as a 402 .030" over, right?)

The TRW L2240 in +060 is still the same piston as the ones you have. They weigh the same also, about 740 grams in the o'size.

Jimmy,
I got hold of a new L2240NF.060 and weighed it today. It was 884 grams with the pin. It is just a bit over 3" tall from the bottom of the skirt to the flat part of the top. If you can get someone to weigh your piston and see how close that is it will help. If its way off, let me know the total weight of the piston and pin and I will try a couple of obsolete warehouses, someone will probably have one.

Thanks for all the input. I ordered a SUPPOSED same piston from Summitt and it will be here today. I'll weigh it and see what happens!

The machiine shops scale had a head dropped on it - O.O.S.

Since there are no other machine shops in town and I don't know any drug dealers, I went to a pawn shop that weighs gold. No deal, too much weight.

Ahhh! The NAPA paint store! The mixing scale!

Results: L2240NF = 891.9 grams W/ pin
2312P = 876.2 grams W/ pin

15.7 grams difference

I also found quite a bit of milling marks inside of the old piston. Every one of them has had some lightening done to it, so that's why the old pistons are lighter than what was thought before.

So, does 15.7 grams make a difference? What's the max tolerance?

Probably a balancing job.

try jegs, they sell a number of single sealed power forged pistons
