Guys I just dropped in a 350 in my 69, with a ministarter,
well the regular (old) starter had 2 small wire going to 2 different terminals.
One was tan, the other looks like its been cut/respliced because its
about a 10gauge and purple - this is the wire I have hooked up to
the small terminal on the mini, and I left the tan wire off, does it have to be
hooked up too? or both of them? I can bump the new ministarter with a
screwdriver so it should be good, I think its just the way I wired it.
Any help on what to do with the 2 small wires?

Thanks
Rafel

If the motor turns over, but will not start, you will need to add a relay to provide power to the coil while cranking.
Many of the GM ignition switches cut the power to virtually everything while cranking.

Purple wire to "SOL"----------yellow wire to "R" on the original starter.
You cannot just put both wires on the same terminal, must go thru a relay.
If you don't use a relay, the car will continue to crank after it has started.

Add a wire to the SOL post and run it to #85 on the relay.
Run a ground wire to #86 on the relay---and of course to ground

Add a wire to the BATT post on the starter, and run it to #30 on the relay
Add a yellow wire FROM #87 on the relay to the coil +

This should get it started.

I forgot - it doesnt do anything, the only way to get it to turn over is to
"just" the terminals with a screwdriver, otherwise with the key its doesnt even make a sound. I have any HEI dissy too, so thats no problem, I just need it to turn over.

So should I:
Stick the tan wire on the small terminal?
or
Stick both the purple and tan wire on the small terminal?

(right now just the purple wire is on the small terminal and it does nothing)

You may have a problem with your neutral safety switch or your ignition switch. Is there 12v on the purple wire when you turn the ignition to 'start'?

The purple wire is the wire that actuates the solenoid. You want to use it and it alone on the small terminal.

If you need power to the tan wire to run your ignition when cranking, put a diode in series with it and hook it to the purple wire. The diode will isolate the solenoid from the ignition when the purple wire is not hot.

do a search on diodes on the site, with a mini starter the two small wires can be hooked together as long one has a diode connecter to it. summit sells the diode wire.
