Sorry, since I'm sure this question's been asked many times before, but a search turned up nothing. In fact, I must be doing something wrong since whenever I do a search, the results are all unrelated to the question and are today's posts! Anyway, Im asking for a friend who has a 70 SS but wants to know how he can positively confirm whether or not it is a true SS. Having had 69's almost forever, I didn't know what to tell him about his 70. Can anyone tell us what to look for?
Thanks,
Rich

Same as 69's Rich, There is NO positive way to tell without documentation.
Any SS stuff could have been added over the years.
Did he check for a build sheet?

WITHOUT the original motor its impossible to prove in those yrs I think thru 71 comes up concurs. It may very well be but without original drive train its impossible to prove.I had some 69s the last one did not have the original drive train I knew what it was but for all intents and purpose I could not prove it

Thanks everyone for all the help! So far, I haven't seen the car, but he sent me some pics and it does have the big block and cowl hood, he says it has the SS speedo (not sweep). It just may end up being as some of you have said, that it's never known for sure.
So, 70 is the same as 69, where the SS was an option package and not a seperate model?
Thanks,
Rich

Correct.

Some good indicators are matching numbers big blocks with correct suffix's, but of course these can be restamped so are not definitive.

Kansas built SS's have some anomolies that also could indicate SS origin, but not 100% documented.

But as stated, without buildsheet, no proof. But again, even these can be forged.

All you can do is remove any and all resonable doubt.

"L" on the Cowl tag.. Doing a search on Kansas "L" will give you more reading than you want on the topic.

Rich,

If he can drive the car, tell him to take it to the UPS Car Show Saturday in Laurel, MD. Many of us from the Maryland Chevelle Club will be there and we can look at his car.
