it is most likely exhaust leak... does it get louder on acceleration and softer on engine deceleration/braking?

it gets quicker when i accerate and slows when my rpms drop..... i dont think its an exhaust leak it sounds like its inside the motor, head or what ever......

exhaust leaks sound like a tick tick tick.
You should be able to hear your valve train with a solid cam, but it shouldnt be "loud", and it shouldnt clack or sound like a sewing machine depending on the lash.

if you feel it is not the ex. leak, you can do a check of the valves by simply removing the valve covers/lay a old towel over the valve train/ start engine/ take the heel of your hand and apply slight pressure over the spring portion rocker arms/then do the back or push rod portion. To me this is the best quick check you can do for the valve train. Just make sure you keep an eye on the oil level! it can get messy good luck. smile.gif

If you eliminate an exhaust leak, then you'll need to set the valves. You say you don't know if its a solid or hyd cam, that presents a huge problem.
First thing. You can hear thius at idle? Get a piece of small hose 3' long, stick one end in your ear, and use the other end as you stethescope to isolate exactly where the noise is coming from. If it isnt an exhaust leak, then pull the valve cover and begin to set the valves in the area of the noise. Run a search here on the valve setting procedure.

What wieght of oil are you running? If the ticking noise ONLY occurs after the car is warm it could be that the heat of the engine has seriously thinned out your oil and could cause that lifter tick sound. Once the engine cools down the oil will will return to its normal state and the sound will disappear until the engine gets warm again.

I have the same problem with my 350. I was told that it was an exhaust leak so I tightend the bolts on the headers and it went away. However it could be a spark jumping.

i took it to my mechanic and he adjusted the valves for me and it took alot of the noise away he said that one of the rocker arms is prolly worn out and **** so he said that if i changed to roller rockers that it would prolly all go away......but he also said that it could have messed up a lobe on my cam so..... i was plannin on changing my cam anyways so im gonna put a new cam and roller rockers on it in a few months ;) then later on im gonna put some performer RPM edelbrock heads on it graemlins/beers.gif
