hey guys, i just recently picked up a 66 ss 396 chevelle that needs complete restoration and was thinking about doing the work myself. the only problem is that the cowl on this car is very rusted out in areas where they dont make panels for. rusted out so badly that where that seam is where the cowl area meets up with the outer firewall is rusting out as well as the area under the windshield wiper assembly to the point where its letting water get into the car when it rains. theres also some substantial rust under the drip rail of the roof where the window seal rail is. i was wodering what i can do to fix this or would i just be better off to find another body thats in better shape and use it. please help me because i dont have a lot of money in it and i really want to give this car another chance instead of giving up on it. oh, i also have pics of these areas for anyone who wants to help and give me some advice. here is a link to some pics.

Can you post the pics on photobucket or a similar sight and provide a link? If those are the only areas, you ought to go for it. Sounds like a good project car. The area at the base of the windshield is a very common place for rust.

Yes, rust damage at the base of the windshield and rear window pretty much goes with the territory for these old chevelles. Most of the major part suppliers sell repair panels for both of these areas. The panel below the wiper transmission is almost flat so you could fabricate patch panels for this area fairly easily and it will be out of sight when finished. The area below the roofrails could be problematic as fitment will be critical to get the windows to eventually seal on the weatherstrip. If it is a true SS, I say go for it. Do not alter the area anywhere near the cowl tag.

yes it is most definitely an ss. i knew that they made reaplacement panels for the area under the windshield, my main concern was the area under the wiper transmission. i will post pics soon on photobucket.
