Hey, Great forum, great info.
I hate to ask for a value like this, as I don't have any spefic details at this time, but time is of the essence in this circumstance.

I live on the Gulf coast in Mississippi, and we are having a great time at "Cruisin the Coast" where I spotted a 68 Malibu body only for sale (no eng, tranny). The body looks straight, but there wasn't time to check the car out completely. The seller had it on a trailer and was going back to his hotel, I was walking along beside and behind trying to check it out.

I will give the car a close inspection before buying it , but I'm wondering if $4,500 would be out of line. I'd sure hate to see someone else snap it up.

Many thanks for any help.

way to expensive for just a gutted malibu. DO some more searching and you will find better deals. I foudn my 68 SS in black primer, small block, 4 speed, buckets, console for $4500

Without pictures and more details it is imposssible to say whether it is a good deal or not. It might be a good deal if the body is solid and needs no sheetmetal repair has good glass and, interior etc. As has already been stated you could probably buy a running car for that, but if it is full of bondo and needs all it's panels replaced the car without the engine, and tranny would be in the long run a better deal.

Thanks for the input, I'll try to track down the car and get some pics, and more details. I remember the owner saying there is a disc brake conversion kit that comes with the car .
I didn't see the interior, but my first impression was that all sheet metal was very clean, paint may be original but I would repaint anyway, all glass was intact. My intention would be to create a clone of the 68 SS 396 I owned in the early 70s so I'm willing to do a complete frame off rebuild (I won't say restoration) with new interior.
I would document the entire process and never represent the car as anything other than a clone.
I have seen clones for sale approaching 30K, but I have not seen any evidence that anyone is buying at that price.
I have owned a 66 SS 396 3spd, a 67 SS 396 4 spd and a 68 SS396 4spd.
I bought the 68 as a body minus engine and trans in 1973 for $500. It was my favorite and I've always wanted to replace it.

Thanks again for the input, all opinions provoke thought.

The original poster didn't say this - where did you get the info? A guy posted to get some advice and you vultures want to eat his flesh. This happens way too often lately. If you aren't here to help, then let the post go to someone who will.

You're reading that all wrong man...it was just a question of contrast...I was meaning what would such a car that was really really rough bring 1500???

You know you should not call people names like vultures and crap...you are a gold member...I guess I should say what is a basketcase 68 worth...you know one with no front windshield no interior etc...???

I guess another good question would be what would a roller no title car be worth???

Don't you think these reference points could help the man estimate the worth of the car he is considering???

The best course is to answer his question - not muddy the water. It was a straight question and I'm sure he wanted a straight answer. The way you wrote your answer appeared as if you were making a statement about the car he was looking at. If you're offended I apologize, but all too often I see attacks on posters for no reason. This is a place to help others. Let's all try to stick to that.
