Dads 1970 chevelle SS is now up and running with a successful heart and brain transplant.
As some of you know we ordered a Ramjet 502 from Sallee chevy, had it dynoed, and dropped it in.
It made 503 HP and 572 Ft.Lbs. The dyno starts at 2400 RPM and it was already making 530 Ft Lbs.
The swap was not exactly a drop in. We installed hooker comp headers, and they needed hammered in a few places on the passenger side. The firewall required a tiny bit of clearancing for the ignition module. A custom fuel tank was built by rock valley and had a TPI fuel pump installed in it. Street and performance provided some fuel rail fittings, which are larger than the aeroquip fittings internally, I felt them better for fuel flow. The wiring was extremely simple. The car has A/C which makes the #8 spark plug virtually impossible to access without removing the inner fender. The swap took 7 days, and today it went on its maiden voyage. Its VERY impressive. You just haven't experianced throttle response until you have experianced a ramjet. It will smoke the tires from a stop without powerbraking. It pulls hard from any RPM. Its quieter and a lot smoother than the 454 it replaced. More maintenance free too. I can recommend Sallee chevy (Tom), and the ramjet 502 wholeheartedly. I would also recommend rock valley for the fuel tank. I won't mention the fuel line supplier because I will NOT recommend him. The fuel lines were by far the worst part of the entire job.
The engine starts instantly, and idles with a bit of a lope. It runs incredibly smoothly at speed, and did I mention it pulls like a frieght train???
The stock SS domed hood shut without mods, however to allow for engine movement, I cut out some bracing under the hood as there was only 1/4 inch of room between the intake and the hood. I used clay to check. The stock accessories and clutch fan bolted up and clear the ramjet air filter without problems. Power brakes are far more effective with this engine than the last. I don't know the actual readings on vacuum though.
The maiden voyage was uneventful, and I will need only to redo the gas tank vent as it leaks under hard acceleration, and I need to loosen up the fuel sending unit because it sticks. The engine runs flawlessly, and even came with an oxygen sensor!!! This is a new setup I think.
I had to fabricate a new shorter throttle cable, spectre makes a great kit for this, and was found in autozone. The engine comes with a short water pump, which I had switched to a long style, and I had the oil pan replaced with a moroso 6 quart for a chevelle. I had to cut a length of the trans lines out where they run under the oil pan and replace it with rubber hose that was double clamped to prevent slipping off. I used a starter heat blanket, and heat resistant boot covers on all the spark plug wires.
The car was quick before but now I consider it truly a fast car. Email me for more info! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
