I have my motor coming back at the end of the month, and I need headers. I spoke to hooker direct and was told they don't actually make the headers for my combo. I was told that he could sell a set to 2 different people with the same application 1 set will fit and the other won't fit   . I know you guys are running these motors and I am sure you didn't skip the headers :D . its a 71 chevelle with a dart 9.8 block and dart pro1 heads. any help will be appreciated.
thanks
Ron

Try Lemmons headers. A litle pricey but quality second to none. I think there web site is . www.lemonsheaders.com (http://www.lemonsheaders.com)
One thing i learned is to get them non coated fit them in the car make sure every thnig works then send them out
good luck

Ron,

Hooker Competitions 2" primary fit right in. I had to make a small ding to clear the corner of the DS lower control arm. Other than that they fit perfect. My Chassis is exactly the same as yours same header part number for '70 to '72 Chevelle.

A close friend did some back to back testing of the Hooker Competitions to the Hooker Super Comps at a track rental. absolutely no difference in ET or MPH in a 454 11.90 '69 chevelle street/strip car.

Just some extra info..

Ron,
I bought a set of Hooker Super Comps #2265, 21/8" primary for my '70 with the Merlin III/ Dart Pro I 325cc heads. I haven't installed them yet...waiting for the car to get out of the paint shop.
Gonna be fun, for sure. Looks like both #5 & #6 tubes, which come loose, go out around the frame.
And I've already had them Jet-Coated...
Fit good on the dyno though. ;)

I used Hooker Super Competition headers part# 2217 on my 540cid 70 Chevelle. 2 in tubes with 3.5 collector. Merlin II 9.8 block, Dart race ported oval ports and Moroso solid mounts. Ports are raised .300. The reason why hooker told you they may/may-not fit is because all of their headers are made stock engines, stock heads and stock motor mounts. Aftermarket heads with raised ports, and type of mounts used have a effect on header clearance. Theirs just too many different combinations for them to guarantee they will fit but mine did. No dingging either.

thank you for your help, atleast i know what some of the problems are as for the fit and have some header numbers to work with. i used tubular upper and lower A arms maybe that help in clearance. I really didn't want dents in the headers.

undeess70
did you change the engine side of the mount or did you also change the frame side?

For what it's worth I just ordered a pair of the Hooker Comp headers with 2" primaries for my 540. I am just waiting for them to arrive. I ordered them directly from Jet Hot. Their prices were only slightly higher than what Summit sells them with the ceramic coating. So if you do decide to go with them and want coated ones I'd recommend giving Jet Hot a call. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

OK Here comes the  in the punch bowl. I can't find the phone number and in fact Jack may have quit working, but Davis Step Headers are awesome. Check it out. ....(909)391-2332 have not done anything with Jack Davis is 7 years but he is the best and you will feel the difference. This number may not be current. Anyone dealt with him recently???? graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Undee70SS,
You posted you are running 2 inch primaries > 3 1/2 inch collectors. Are you happy with that configuration or do you wish you would have gone larger. I dont know what kind of horsepower you running but I am currently building a 540 and hoping for 800+ h.p. I know I should have at least 2 1/8 primaries, but thought about going smaller considering this is a street/strip car.
Thanks for the reply

Ron,

The Super Comps are lighter and are equal length tubes...but on the 11.90 6000 RPM '69 chevelle car, no difference..

On a 7500 RPM Combination or where every pound is critical the would likely be worth the extra $

70 SS540, I am curious as to what your combination is or is going to be..If you don't mind..

It's your typical 540 dart block 4.50 bore 4.25 stroke. The heads are aluminum dart pro1 heads 2.30/1.88 119cc out of the box. the compression will be 10.0-10.5. Dart 4500 single plane intake but will be using a 4150 carb (b.g. 750 race demon if I can) The cam will be a roller just not selected yet. I am looking to achieve 650-700 hp/tq. I know these motors can do a lot better but I do not want to destroy the integrity of the car. It's a 2 owner almost rust free convertible so I don't want to twist the frame. trans in a t-400 with a manual valve body. 12" disc @ all 4 corners. Tubular control arms f&r. Hope I. Don't get black balled for this one but, ford 9" rear (gear unselected) This will be a street car. If you have any input I am open to comments.

MC71454,
I dont mind at all. 70 Chevelle. It is and gonna be 540 c.i. (may go 555) Dart block, Airflow Research 335 heads, Dart intake, .714 lift both sides approx 274 duration @.050 roller, 12.1 compression. Possibly King Demon 1095. Fresh Turbo 400 manual reverse valve body 10" Coan steel stator covertor about 4400 stall on the new motor. 12 bolt with Moser axles Eaton Posi. Most of the parts are in. Should be on the dyno in about 6-8 weeks. It will dynoed along with a basically the same cofiguration 540 with Brodix 2 Plus heads. That could be interesting! Now with the help of all the pros out there in Chevelle land, I got to get it to hook up decent on 10.5 inch slicks!! ha!! graemlins/beers.gif

Just for info...

I have dyno'd my 540 several times with several sizes of headers. When it was making 732 Hp it seemed to love 2-1/8" ones on the dyno. Last year we did some head porting, intake and cam changes and it made 825 hp. The interesting part was after we had it dialed in pretty good we tried some 2-1/4" ones against a set of 2" Chevelle ones with relatively long tubes.

Up to 6400-6500 the 2" tubes kicked the big ones BAD. Probably an average of 25-30hp better, 50hp at some points down low in the 4000 rpm range.

But at 6500 rpm it was like you threw a switch and it went the other way. It was down almost 50 hp at 7400 rpm.

This is a 540 pump gas motor, Brodix 2xtras, solid roller and Super Victor intake with 1050 Dominator.

So if you have it built to stay under 6600 or so, the 2" ones might possibly get it down the track faster. My issue has been traction and control-ability (5 speed stick) so the new engine combo was designed to move power band upward to make it work better. I'll be installing 2-1-8" ones soon to test against the current 2" ones in the car and see what happens.

I also found 40ft lbs increase on chassis dyno with pipes capped up as opposed to open headers!

70SS540, I am happy with the the 2in tubes. My dyno results are here (http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=014447) I haven't drove the car yet (this spring for sure smile.gif ) If your going to be over 800hp I would go with the 2 1/8 tubes. Mine is also a street/strip car

by any chance do you have the part numbers on the moroso mounts. i am going to try to install 2" headers without them first but I want them on hand just in case.

thanks
