So now that I have the 454 thats gonna pretty mild...low 9's compression ratio, mild porting, forged pistons, not sure on cam but nothin too crazy as it has to work with my edelbrock dual plane topped off with a 100 shot. for the rear end i'm gonna do an powertrax locker with either 3.73 or 4.10s in the 12 bolt. drive shaft loop and solid u-joints. The weak point in my car now is the trans.. So now i'm looking at getting a turbo 400 and a transbrake. I've read a few short articles on how it works and from what i see on pinks it looks like it has an advantage at the track...so i want it!
My questions, would a turbo 400 out of a early to late 70's 3/4 ton truck be suitable as trans? the junkyard is having a 1/2 off sale this weekend so i want to take advantage and get one for like $50bucks:yes:
2nd Q, should I or do i need a trans brake? If so how much and which one should i get? It seems like Tci is a common name... thanks guys

By what it sounds like to me, if you get the trans from the junk yard it will still be your weak link. If you are wanting to run a good running BBC and then add NOS to it, I don't think the junk yard tranny will hold up that long.
If it was me, I would talk a good tranny builder like Rossler or Art Carr in Calif. They both build a good transmission and stand behind what they build.
If you want to rebuild the trans from the junk yard, I would have the case inspected for any cracks or defects first. Then find a good book to read and follow on how to rebuild it yourself.
For the TH400, I believe that one from the truck should work, but you might have to shorten your drive shaft. I would be worried about the insides, and what your motor will do to it!!!!
When I did the tranny change, I went with a Rossler TH400, and it has lived behind my BBC for 10 years now. My motor is not weak either.
This is some food for thought for you.

I wouldn't run a transbrake on a mild mostly street car.
Even many strip cars will footbrake as good as or near as good as a t-brake setup.
The truck core will work OK, the output shaft needs to be changed on rebuild or you need to get the proper yoke to work with the output shaft.

I guess part me wanted the trans brake cuz I wanted my car to pull the front tires off the ground, hell i could kind of care less if the car ran a 15 as long as the it pulls the front wheels off the ground:D Would obtaining the proper yoke be a difficult task? I didnt think about that.. I'm guessing the driveshaft length will different as well

The yoke is available from Spicer.
It is counterbored to allow it to slip over the truck o-ring area on the output shaft.
Length depends...
You can pull the front tires without a transbrake, that is traction, power, and converter...
