: Putting quarter skins on my GTO
427stingray Oct 3rd, 07, 5:54 PM I just ordered quarter skins (thats all they make) for my 67 GTO. The last time I installed some was about 20 years ago. How I did it was to lay the new one over the old. Tack the new one into place, Then I took a cut off wheel and cut out the quarters. The new one fit exactly into where the old one was, and then I just tacked it into place. And welded every 1/2 inch at different spots to avoid warpage.
Are there other methods and what do you guys recommend.
Andy69 Oct 3rd, 07, 6:41 PM are you saying you tacked the new on on over the old, and then cut along the edge of the overlap, removing the scrap from the backside? that's a good approach. Did it work well?
427stingray Oct 3rd, 07, 6:59 PM It worked fine,When you finished cutting you could remove both panel from the front and then replace the new panel where the old one was. It would fit perfect because you made the same cut on both panel. I hope I explained it so you could understand.
MakMetalFab Oct 3rd, 07, 11:47 PM thats how i like to do it! I jsut did the pocess on a 66 mustang and will be doing it shortly on my 67 leMans-GTO project.

MakMetalFab Oct 3rd, 07, 11:48 PM Forgot to say, do it as close to a body line as possible, this minimizes warping.
427stingray Oct 4th, 07, 7:36 PM Where did you get the GTO quarters from?
velle69florida Oct 4th, 07, 8:09 PM good post. i am getting ready to replace some 1/4's on my 71 chevelle. every little bit of info helps us all
Alwhite00 Oct 4th, 07, 8:51 PM A 1/32nd cut off wheel would work good. You would have a nice gap then.

What is the best way to hold the quarter in place as I weld it in.

It would fit perfect because you made the same cut on both panel. I hope I explained it so you could understand.I think both Andy and I understood it as you left the new panel on as you cut the old panel off and removed it from the backside.
I think what you're saying, though, is that you cut both the new (tacked on) and the old panel off at the same time. When you remounted the new panel you had an exact line to weld to from where you cut them both off.
That does sound like a good method. ;)
rex362 Oct 7th, 07, 6:38 PM that reminds me of the last time I layed wallpaper ...:D
does this method work ?.....have many other done this way ...?
would that leave a large gap ? (it doesn't in wallpaper bcs the cut is blade fine )
I have both sides to do and am contemplating which way to go ...
427stingray Oct 7th, 07, 10:38 PM I did it 20 years ago, that was the last set of quarters I put on. It worked fine and the cut line worked out fine, because you are using the same cutoff wheel for both panels at once.
MakMetalFab Oct 7th, 07, 11:12 PM it leaves a smaller and nicer gap then scribing a line and then cutting off to the line. Both parts always match perfectly. If you angle the cutting wheel about 45* to the surface you are cutting then the gap gets smaller as a matter of fact they basically touch.
rex362 Oct 9th, 07, 10:47 AM If you angle the cutting wheel about 45* to the surface you are cutting then the gap gets smaller as a matter of fact they basically touch.;) see...I would never of thought of that ...thanks ...maybe this is the way I go on mine ...
also I imagine you can make your cut from the outside ...same thing ?
better than being in the trunk ..
...and what to use to temporarily tac the quarters together ...?

The last time I did it I put rivets inside the cut lines to hold it in place. After the cut, just drill them out separate the quarters and weld the holes closed.
