Right now I'm running my 454 with a 3:36, M-22 and a cam with 282/288 & 244/252 @0.5 with 0.598 lift.

What would be an ideal or better rearend ratio for my combo? 3:55? 3:70? Or should I live with the 3:36?

Thanks

Len

I bet it's not a lot of fun in traffic. A change to an M-20 or a ST-10 with a 2.66 or 2.88 low would make it a lot more driver friendly.

with that m22 close ratio a minumun performance gear would be 3.73 or 4.11 smile.gif

If you've still got some of the kids inheritance to spend ;) I would look for a used Doug Nash or some equivalent 5 speed then you'd have the best of both worlds.

When I re-do the rear end, I think I'll at least step up to the 3.73's maybe the 4.11's, We'll see.
It's a street cruiser and we don't do a whole lot of highway driving.

New tranny is outa the picture. I'm keeping this M-22.

A set of 3.90's would be a good compromise between 3.73's and 4.11's.

Love those 68-72 Vettes. Had a '71 Factory 454/365 w/AC car about 12 years ago. You know - one of the cars that you really regret not keeping! Maybe consider redoing your M22 with the new wide ratio gearsets available. I run 3.73's with an auto/3000 converter and a 28" tire. With your 26" tall tires, you're not that far off with the 3.36. 3.73's are ok around town, but scream at 65 -70. Sometimes I wonder how we all managed to tolerate the 4.10 & 4.56 gears that we all ran years ago.

"Seemed like a good idea at the time!"

My 4.30's with 29" Sportsman Pros really isn't that bad on the interstate.

At 65, the motor's turning 3200rpm. This may sound like alot, but with the cam I'm running this RPM seems to be it's "Sweet Spot".

I think you can get away with abit more gear on the interstate and a stick car because you don't have the torque convertor slippage to worry about.
