: looking for exhasut syst
velle69florida Oct 3rd, 07, 7:45 AM can anyone suggest a good exhaust system for a 454. the engine is a 1998. i am running magnaflow catback on my truck and i really like the sound of it. i was thinking of running magnaflow on the chevelle too, but when i look on their website i didn't see any 454 applications listed
dgrobels Oct 3rd, 07, 8:15 AM if your looking to do it yourself you can buy the pipes and mandrels and do it yourself fairly easily
or you can penny up and get a custom shop to bend you a set but your gonna pay $400 or more but thats dropping it off picking it up done in one day
thats with the mufflers too
we have a place called MUFFLEX here in jersey he does good work but expensive
i had a friend of a friend do a complete 3" setup on my mustang and my oldsmobile for $350 but i gave him the mufflers ....i think i pid like $200 fo rht emustang cause i run dumps on it
velle69florida Oct 3rd, 07, 8:38 AM magnaflow wants $800 for the set up. i paid $500 for my truck system and i installed it out of the box.
427L88 Oct 3rd, 07, 8:50 AM Keep the head pipes at 3" Jaime. I use the big, BIG Magnaflow 12578s under my 67. Quiet enough, yet no restriction at at WOT.
My system was designed for a bigger motor, which I wont use, but 3.5" X #" X pipe drirect from Dr. Gas, Magnaflow 12578 muffs and Torque Tech tails.
Best deal is a 3" kit WITHOUT mufflers from Summit, etc. 3" tailpipes are big, and fit tight, and are quite unessesary under, say 600 hp.
By the time the exhaust gas hits the muff, its temps and pressures are way down. The size of tail pipe is more about looks/sound. I went 2.5". It isnt slowing down an "L88-type" motor at all. And I like the stealthier look.

Check out Torque Tech, I bought their 3" system, mufflers, clamps, etc. and I believe it was under $800 including shipping. The system fit extremely well and the customer service was excellent. Because of my headers I had to have one pipe custom bent locally for another $60.00. And listen to Gene, a 3" system will be loud but I do like it :).

Jegs Part #555-30555
# Header-Back Dual 3'' Exhaust Kit,1964-72 Chevelle/Malibu/El Camino
# Applications:1964-72 Chevelle/Malibu/El Camino
# 1965-72 Skylark/GS/Cutlass/442
# 1966-72 Le Mans/Tempest/GTO
# 1969-72 Grand Prix
# 1970-72 Monte Carlo
Utilizes an offset inlet/offset outlet muffler with a 13'' - 14'' length.
I have used these kits on both of my 68's, and they work great. I bought some hooker aero chambers and they sound great.
I just ordered the kit and mufflers from Jegs, and had my local exhaust shop, hang it, and completely weld it up for $150.00. I would suggest going and talking to the exhaust shop and get an estimate, just tell them you are supplying all the parts, you just need them to install it.
Good luck!!!!!
velle69florida Oct 3rd, 07, 2:53 PM sounds good, thanks all
aukai Oct 3rd, 07, 2:54 PM You can buy the flowmaster pipe set only and put the mufflers of your choice
Rhino70SS Oct 3rd, 07, 3:25 PM I have the flowmaster full exhaust H pipe and all. it fits nice and sounds great. I have the 3 chamber bigblock mufflers on it.
velle69florida Oct 3rd, 07, 3:29 PM how much did that cost ya? is it something you ordered right off the internet? 454 application?
ChaosEnvy Oct 3rd, 07, 3:32 PM I like Pypes Exhaust, not a bad price for Stainless.
Rhino70SS Oct 3rd, 07, 3:40 PM yes, we had to do a little fab work since I had Long tube headers and electronic cutouts welded in. I really don't remember how much it cost me.
aukai Oct 3rd, 07, 3:42 PM I don't care for the flowmaster muffler resonance at about 1700 to 2000 rpm
71malibu406 Oct 3rd, 07, 5:32 PM I don't care for the flowmaster muffler resonance at about 1700 to 2000 rpm
i know what you mean. i have 40 series flowmasters on my '91 LX Mustang and the resonance at 1800-2000rpms is mind numbing after awhile. going to be switching it to the dynomax super turbos soon. i have yet to hear a straight through type muffler that i like, that includes magnaflow, ultraflos, hooker max flows, none of them. they sound good at idle and part throttle but i just can not stand the sound at WOT and when you let off the gas from WOT.
dirtrocker Oct 3rd, 07, 8:27 PM I bought the magnaflow 2.5" stainless kit for my wagon. Problem I ran into was the center X crossover section comes welded together. Mine was irregular !?!?!
U could set it on a flat surface and see it. I went round with magnaflow and all they could tell me was they "guessed something moved when we welded that one" *DUH*.
If you can buy one local, magnaflow may be a good choice. Given my experience....wish I'd bought Torque Tech.
