I'm running a 950HP on my 496 and so far it's performed flawlessly. I took a plug wrench with me on my pass and pulled a plug on the return road. The plugs were brand new and throughout the day were on the white side with a slightly gray tinted ring around them. Some of the guys at the track said they looked good so I kept running it how it is.

First, where do I even start on tuning this carb for all the ET I can get. It's a box STOCK 950HP. Stock jets, squirters, acc pumps, etc. I notice a lot of guys running 50cc acc pumps. what is stock in my carb? I also notice a lot of you guys running larger squirters?

How do I start tuning this thing? Is there a order you go in to find the best combo as far as jetting first, then squirters?? Sorry if this is so confusing just trying to look at all the aspects and this is a relatively cheap thing to tune. Are there any good books I can buy to learn more about this? Thanks for all the help as always.

Does it launch cleanly without any bog or hesitation? If so, the accelerator pump system is in tune and you don't need a 50cc pump. Try jetting up 2 sizes. If the car gains MPH, go up 2 more. Keep going until the car doesn't gain any more then back off 2 sizes. At this point, you have the accelerator and main jet systems tuned. If it idles fine, your done.

You can, if you like, put a vacuum gauge on the carb at idle in gear and replace the power valve with one 2" lower then the vacuum reading. A number of people disagree but I don't think this is necessary.

Before starting on carb tuning, make sure the timing is right. Depending on the cam, you'll want between 14 and 20º (maybe more). The total should be around 36-40º without the vacuum advance hooked up. You can try different totals, just watch the mph. When it stops increasing back off 1 or 2º.

There is some info on reading plugs linked in my sig.

So is there also no need to mess with the squirters. I'll try the jetting just as soon as I get the timing situation figured out.

One other thing that suprised me is that I tried shifting at 6200 and it slowed the car down shifting higher, does that sound right.

THAT'S why i love the holley HP line so much very little tuning.... that's why when i bought my 2nd 950hp off ebay and i put it back stock and i couldnt get it tuned, i KNEW there was something a miss..... even the 1000hp has taken very little tuning.. (although i think i do need the 50cc pump in front)
