crankitup Feb 3rd, 05, 10:50 PM Need your help choosing a carb. I have an 750 edelbrock from my old 454 motor.I rejeted it for the new motor, a 496, which seemed to help it come to life, but I still think it could use more carb. I am going to buy a mighty demon 850 or a holley 950hp.Both of course are double pumpers with mechanical secondaries. I have been told the demon 850 will actually flow 950cfm. The price for the demon is $500.00 and the holley is $675.00. Since I went way over buget on the new 496, I do not want to spend the extray $175 if the demon will perform as will as the holley. Just a little info on the new 496, it has 9 to 1 compression, 781 oval port heads with big valves and mild port work, comp 286 hr cam 236/242 duration 540 lift, edlebrock performer rpm intake, headman headers, turbo 400, tci 2500 stall,3:31 gears, 27" rear tires, in a 69 ss (3800 lbs).Does anyone have any thoughts or experiance with these carbs? Thanks for your help. Trey
Bob West Feb 3rd, 05, 11:12 PM Hey Trey...HP950 is what I have and I swear by it, I know the old BG's had issues, but maybe they have them cleared up by now. I got my carb thru Jegs but its been a few years back, cost around 612.00 back then, I guess thats inflation :D
Tech @ BG Feb 4th, 05, 4:34 PM Trey,
An 825 Mighty Demon would be a better choice on this combination. The 825 will give you better air velocity, throttle response, acceleration, and performance, and still flow more than the 950HP would.
Bob West Feb 4th, 05, 10:30 PM Would the tech @ BG be willing to guarantee better performance with the Mighty Demon over the HP950 ?
ak69 Feb 5th, 05, 12:34 AM Yeah, What the Bob said. BG man gonna throw down with the Bob? BG needs to send the Bob one of them there Mighty Demons, bolt it on the new bullet for some testing. I would not expect for anyone who works for Company B to reccomend Company H's carb. For every guy that you will find singing the priase of a BG carb, you will find 50 others telling you the 950 HP is THE carb for out of the box performance. Do the right thing, make it 51. Or, if your bucks up and have an extra C note, contact Pro-Systems for a hp carb built for your combo.
smokumchevy Feb 5th, 05, 4:32 PM I run a 750 Mighty (out of the box, and later an upsize on the front squirter when I went to ET Streets), on a healthy 548hp 383 advertised to flow up to 830 with no issues. And as well, local buddy's running bigblocks more aggressive than your build running 830's and 850's with no issues what-so-ever. They are running in the low 10's with a mild juiceshot and low to mid 11's on the motors.
The holley vs demon will go on forever with claims on both sides (ps: the demon issues that keep getting mentioned are long overwith as is usual with a new release). Sooooooooo, if it were me, I'd say save the extra bones and buy a mighty (much nicer looking under the hood as well), but its not, so decide for yourself and enjoy your ride.

On the dyno today a holley HP1000 was worth 7 ft/.lbs of TQ but lost 1 HP over my BG 850.... these were on back to back pulls.
michael n mississippi Feb 5th, 05, 7:00 PM ok heres ya another math formula to remember. this will tell you very close to what CFM carb you need. CID=496 x top rpm 5000= 2480000 divided by 3.456 = app.720cfm

I am just curious how the bigger holley produced more torque but lost hp to the smaller sized demon. From what I have read the demons flow more than advertised while the holley flows less.
I just need some more edumucation :D
