I did the long awaited monster burn out after a car show and now my ss 454 will not idle well. I have a 454 with a 292 cam and a 750 edlebrock carb. What has happen?

I don't know what could be wrong but you'll probably get a better answer if you post in one of the other forums....this is the classifieds. ;)

I had a car that used to do that, the float on the Holley would stick!

Well, if your fuel system checks out, then I would suggest peeling the valvecovers off and looking for some out of whack valvetrain madness. If you were singing some high rpms during the burnout all sorts of things could have gone wrong, including one or more valves getting bent.

Even before checking out the fuel system, I would almost be inclined to peel of the valvecovers for a visual of the valvetrain - who knows what lurks there.

Did you check your timing? High rpms might have moved the dist. if it wasn't tightened down enough. Also, like was mentioned, valve train issues. Did you over rev?

oops its a edle not a Holley

You broke something in the valve train.

may have gas fouled one or more of the plugs, if the car started to launch and you had to lay on the brakes, it may just have gas fouled the plugs.

Let us know what you find! Any video of the burn?

I sure hope it is fouled out plugs. It runs fine as long as you keep it up around 1800 rpms, etc. After it warms up real good it will begin to idle. Please tell me it is not valve train. Not my show car please.

Showcar burnout contest? - take it out to the drags and do what you've really been wanting to do :D

Thomas

P.S. I vote for a bent valve from excessive rpms. For unknown reasons many burnout contestants never look at the tachometer.

Anything over 5sec burnout is excessive even for some racing applications. Do that to a cast crank in a burnout contest and you can kiss engine goodbye! I'm guessing something in valvetrain! Check your springs and for bent pushrods first as thats easy to do. Compression test will show condition of engine instantly! Goodluck!

Do that to a cast crank in a burnout contest and you can kiss engine goodbye!Usually the burnout contest consist of the more low buck vehicles. Most of which all have cast cranks, and they drive away just fine. I don't think a burnout puts anymore stress on a vehicle then a hard launch.

Bent valve. Bleeds off enough compression @ idle to make it run rough, but as the R's climb there is not enough time to bleed off as much and then the cylinder fires. :(

I'm with Luthdog - check ytour timing. I have had the distibutor move on me before. If that checks out, then look at your valvetrain including your timing chain. If it was real sloppy(high mileage), you could have made it jump a tooth.

No one asked this, but does it only idle rough in gear?

It really seems like a fuel problem because it is blowing condenstation about 15 feet out the back and after a few minutes of pampering it will gradually begin to idle but rough. Please don't let it be a bent valve. If I pull the valve covers off will it be very noticable.

Does the lever on a edelbrock carb that attached to the flap on the front two barres suppose to have a spring on the passenger side. Mine is just a lever with a small hole in it with nothing attached. Could this be my idling problem?

I think that if you keep on asking questions that it will fix itself.

Seriously, you seem to be a little reluctant to get in there and check it out - kinda tip toeing around the problem.

By all means, it could be one of many different reasons. Anything from a simple vacumn leak to major engine damage. Most likely the cause will be inbetween those extremes. The reason why several people have suggested a valve train issue is because we have seen the same thing many times over after someone does an over the top burnout.

Best of luck, Thomas

Do you mean, your choke plate??????

Yes the choke plate or flap on the front two barrells. Should the end have a spring on the passenger side. Just don't want to go into the motor.

blowing condensation 15 feet out the back and will run rough after a few minutes of pampering? try this on for size, a blown head gasket and when you let it set it leaks water into the two cylinders and when you start it the plugs are wet and it takes a while for the running to get them dry enough to fire.
you not going to know till you get out there and start checking things out.

If it's broke fix it, and fix it right. You should be able to smolder the tires at will without having to worry about hurting it, or maybe just push it off and on the trailer from now on.

I would have had the covers off and the plugs pulled by now. What are u doing!? I was going to say a valve went out of adjustment, but the condensation is another deal altogehter. Pull the plugs, visually inspect them, and sniff them if you run glycol , you'll smell it clear as day.

You are pulling them to do a compression check ASAP btw.
