We get those alot in the Pittsburgh countryside. They get pretty big and seem aggresive. We always called them banana spiders.

Those things get to be about 2+ inches here in San Antonio.

I can see one out at my front fence from the porch----120ft
The make some cool looking webs too:yes:.
I like watching spiders, and won't kill 'em unless they are in the garage or house. I do try to keep em away from the house, but as many trees as I have----impossible.

It looks like one of the Garden Orb Weaver spiders.
To me the are the best spiders because they are harmless and look awesome. They always stay in their webs, so don't worry about finding one in your pillowcase or boot.

If you really want nature's entertainment, catch a housefly and toss it into the web. The spider will appreciate it and give you a giftwrapping show that will make you appreciate the fact that you are 1000 times larger than it.

So, don't worry about this one - they are good to have around. It's eating the bugs that bug you.

When I was a kid we would shoot them with a BB gun. They explode! Now I feel bad about doing it , but hey! I was just a kid and did not realize the importance of these magnificant little creachers.:)

Sid, That's a Black and Yellow Argiope ( I think that's spelled right). I used to play with them and collect them when I was a kid in the Philly area. We had fields nearby that had hundreds of them and their beautiful webs.

Here's some pics and an explanation of the "dance".
Predation

When disturbed, the spider might first vibrate the web to try to make its body look bigger, but if that fails to deter a predator she will drop to the ground and hide.

I told my girl to come in and look at spider, but I didn't tell her what it was. She hates spiders so she freaked out and ran away.:D

I think I just soiled myself also. I'm a pretty macho guy but I'd scream like a girl if that thing ran in front of me.

Where was this at? I'm definitey not moving there. Think I need to keep going north wehre its colder.

We get alot of WolfSpiders that are similar to these in size and appearance. They are mostly around the perimeter of the yard, under wood piles or stacked bricks, sometimes in overgrown grass. I could probably walk out and find a few right now if I wanted to. They are bug eaters, occaionally little lizards, and aren't real aggressived towards humans.

Once in a while, one will find it's way into the garage, a couple have been caught/killed in the house. Probably passing through, as I don't believe that they are web tenders (like the very common Black Widows). My wife squashed a mama once, literally hundreds of babies that had been clinging to her back, scattered in all directions. Talk about freaked, now she just screams at the sight of any bug. You don't even want to know what she does when she see's a mouse.

No, I know ALL about the dance!!

The "Spider Dance" is where I scream like Andy (or a little girl-whichever is more shrill and higher pitched-like the guy in the original "Home Alone"), and make a bunch of spasdic motions with my body until it figures out how to run the heck AWAY from the spider!

Left the pretty one alone. Killed the Black Widow I found about 3 feet away from it!

I found that late one night at my uncles shop in southeast Kansas. It's a wolf spider, here is a description of it below. You see all kinds of spiders and critters out in the country.

Wolf Spiders ...venomous - non-aggressive

Venom toxicity - the bite of the Wolf Spider is poisonous but not lethal. Although non-aggressive, they bite freely if provoked and should be considered dangerous to humans. The bite may be very painful. First aid and medical attention should be sought as soon as possible, particularly as to children or the elderly.

Spider Identification - an adult is 1/2 inch to more than 1 inch in body length - mottled gray to brown in color, with a distinct Union Jack impression on its back. The female carries it's young on its back.

Habitat - this spider is a ground dweller, with a burrow retreat. It has a roving nocturnal lifestyle to hunt their prey and can move very rapidly when disturbed. Commonly found around the home, in garden areas with a silk lined burrow, sometimes with a lid or covered by leaf litter or grass woven with silk as a little fence around the rim of the burrow.
