I wasn't sure if I should put this in the heating and cooling or not since it does have to do with performance....sorry if I posted in the wrong place . ANYWAY....
I'm just wondering if there is any benefit to running a 160 degree thermostat as opposed to a 180 degree thermostat. I realize that the engine should run cooler with the 160, but I have had people say that it doesn't really matter. I'm only curious because I will have to replace it anyway. What are the pro's and con's toward running a cooler thermostat? graemlins/thumbsup.gif If it matters I won't ever be using the heat in the car so i'm not concerned about that.
Thanks

Con: 160 thermostat---increased rate of cylinder wall wear and sludge formation. Can't think of any pros. You are best off to follow the engine manufactureres recommendations.

Ok. I will be using a 180...but I was just curious. Why does anyone use a 160 thermo then? Just wondering.

I run a Shaw 160 high flow w/ an aluminum rad and high flow water pump. Runs 160-170 all day. I dunno about sludge formation and cylinder wall wear from dropping operating temp 20 degrees. In 20 years of doing I've never seen that happen.

Carbon buildup is another problem with a too cold engine.

but would 20 degree's be considered to large of a change...say if it ran 170f with a 160 degree thermo?
