What things should I be looking for when I go look at 1967 L79 chevelles? I am new to the chevelle world. Any hidden codes, fuel lines certain holes on the firewall etc. Thanks, Sam

Several friends and accquaintances had the L79 Chevelles but I don't remember anything really unique about the cars. I recall that I loved the overall package though..it was so balaced and IMHO done just right from most points of evaluation that you could think of. Almost any option was available..including a 3 Speed manual (actually that was standard I guess ). Remember the engine was rated at 325 horse in 1967 in the Chevelle.

Look for 12 Bolt rear, the big harmonic balancer, tailpipes should exit behind rear wheels, open element air cleaner with low profile base and chrome valve covers with "Chevrolet" stamped on them. Large 2.5 exhaust pipes BUT small manifolds with the engine pipes flaring from 2 to 2.5 inches in the first few inches. Aluminum intake manifold (.....461 ?) Heat stove in intake manifold for the choke. Single chrome fuel line to front drivers side of carb. Road draft tube (I think) and a bypass hose from the intake to the water pump.

I'll add a few things to look for, including those that Oman listed.
1) Open element air cleaner with a 1'' draft tube coming from the vent opening behind the distributor.
2) Aluminum intake with a 3890490 casting number, Holley carb 3806 list number
3) 3/8" fuel line
4) Chrome Chevrolet valve covers
5) Chrome dipstick handle
6) Chrome oil fill tube with threaded boss on the side for a screw in PCV valve.
7) Big 8" harmonic balancer early ones were finned on backside
8) Two piece alternator bracket one mounts from boss on front of intake the other mounts off of left front intake bolt. They are sandwiched together by the bolt on the alternator. The front one is black and the rear one is orange.
9) Coolant line between front of intake and top of water pump.
10) Dual exhaust exiting behind rear wheels.
11) 12 bolt rear end.
12) Heavy duty 3 speed transmission or 4 speed Muncie transmission.
13) Frame stiffeners above rear end on each side.
14) Standard cooling had a 4" wide steel fan shroud while the HD cooling used a plastic fan shroud.

I agree with everything that Oman has stated. It is my belief that the exhaust manifolds were the same as those used on other small blocks. I have checked my old '68 vintage parts books and the part numbers for the manifolds are shown to be the same as those used on other 327 AND 283 engines in '67.
I have several pictures of a very nice original '67 L79 car. You can E-mail me for pictures.

Hinshaw's Chevelles in Elon, NC. He has good prices, can find you any reproduction part made and best of all he's a real Chevelle guy and knows what's what.

This is a photo of the best restored '67 L79 I've ever seen. This is a smog car, not all had smog equipment.
