View Full Version : Bad Proportioning Valve?

I've been trying to get my 68 back on the road but lately it seems I'm losing the battle. The other day I just got the nmotor running again and took my car for a ride. After about ten mile the car was't running right and seemed to be holding back, thought it was a motor issue. Well when I stopped at a red light rear brakes were smoking. Pulled over let them cool and limped home after they cooled down. Pulled the drums and back the spinning adjusters all the way down, loose. This time I went for a 2 mile ride and found the same problem but did'nt cook the brakes this time.
Jacked up again and right rear was much tighter then left although it was also tight. Pulled drums, real tough, and found brake cylinders extended. They would not retract no matter how much pressure I put on them. I cracked the bleed open on the cylinder and they went right back in. Prior to this I never had any brake problem, there are no bent or kinked lines to the rear of the car. So what do you guys think?

Do you have disk brakes in the front? If there were no disk brakes you should not have a proportioning valve, you would have a distribution block. I'm not sure how that could become a problem. You might check the flex hose that runs between the frame and the rear axle.

Glenn the car has drums all around. The distribution block is not proportioning, is there any valving in it? I never thought to check the hoses. I will try that today, a friend had thought it also could be the master cylinder, what do you think?

Yes, the master could cause this problem. The distrubution block has a piston in it that moves back a forth depending on pressure inbalance in the front and rear brack systems. I do not think your problem is there. Replace the rear flex hose and if that does not fix the problem you are mostly looking at the master.

Thanks Glenn you hit the nail on the head, it was the rear hose. I guess I shouldn't complain I got 39 years out of it. It was a battle getting it off and at times I thought the hose was winning but it finally came off without damaging anything else.

Again Thanks

I'm glad it worked out for you, that was a cheap fix.
