: What are some good Mufflers?
bluechevelless Oct 28th, 04, 5:01 PM I need to put a whole exhaust system on my 70 chevelle and im gonna go with headers and I want the stock looking tail pipes. I want a quiet sound when idleing but when you get on it I want people to know its there. I want a good beefy sound. What do you guys suggest? Cheaper is better!
thunderstruck507 Oct 28th, 04, 6:09 PM Holley Flowtech Terminators are what I have, sounds like what you're looking for. I think they call them Afterburners now
MY FYN 79 Oct 28th, 04, 8:16 PM I switched from Flowmasters to Magnaflows and couldnt be happier.
If I was to buy new mufflers again, it would be the Ultra Flo or Magnaflow hands down! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Grape Ape Oct 28th, 04, 8:17 PM I just removed my flo pro mufflers of my 68 with 3" exhaust and replaced them with Magna flow.
Love them...very nice low pitch "especially at idle" and virtually no restriction.
Check them out..
turbo Oct 28th, 04, 8:20 PM Summit turbos sound great and are dirt cheap

m71 Oct 28th, 04, 11:06 PM i have the Terminators on my chevelle too. they are fairly quiet, much quieter than Flowmasters. the ultraflos are a great performance muffler, but i don't like the fact that they spit fiberglass out the pipes everytime you start it up, and they will progressively get louder as more and more fiberglass goes out the pipes onto your garage floor. i'm going with the Hooker aerochambers this spring when i upgrade my exhaust to 3".
etracer Oct 28th, 04, 11:17 PM Dyno max super turbos! Great street muffler IMO!
67ss Oct 29th, 04, 11:25 PM Which flowmasters is it everybody dislikes so much? What series?
Slowpoke70 Oct 30th, 04, 12:54 AM 40 series originals from what I hear. Real loud, lots of interior noise. My friend has them, they sound great from outside the car, hate going on long trips in his car though. I have 3-chamber flows (don't know series) that are way more silent on the inside of the car.
I'm also going to Aerochambers when I upgrade my exhaust.
slpin Oct 30th, 04, 12:59 AM i LOVE my dynomax super turbos... sounds good, pretty quiet too, and it works well... if you want, i could get a soundclip................
427L88 Oct 30th, 04, 7:19 AM I like Magnaflows. Excellent quality. Sound in clip below in sig. That's a big 3.5" system that necks to 3" Magnaflows and then down to 2.5" tails.
obseSSed Oct 30th, 04, 8:18 AM Walker used to make a real nice sounding turbo muffler.Fairly quiet inside, nice sounding rumble when you got on it. Ran them for years, lifetime warranty, stock specs, and the price was right. Could easily buy two for the price of one flowmaster. Have not noticed a difference in performance with flowmasters.Don't know if you can still get them though. I have the flowmasters 40's now and I have to crank my stereo to 200 decibels to hear it.lol. Thinking of switching back. May have a set of flowmasters cheap soon. :D
67ss Oct 30th, 04, 9:53 AM Yeah i thought it was the 40 series everybody didnt like.I have the 50 series on my truck and its not loud at all.I have 2 50 series to go on my 67 when I get that far along.Got a ways to go yet.Im interested in some of the others that you guys are talking about though.I like the sound of the old super turbos from years ago, just didnt know if they can be gotten in 3 in.
elky72ss454 Oct 30th, 04, 11:29 AM I have the Flowmaster 40 series mufflers on mine. It's not loud inside to me. I drive it almost everyday and have driven it on long road trips too. I have 3 inch exhaust through an X-pipe into the flows then 2.5 inch out behind the rear wheels. I have been told the X-pipe makes it quieter. I don't know for sure. There are times when I wished it were louder....
obseSSed Oct 30th, 04, 7:33 PM Must be getting old :D
MadMarv Oct 30th, 04, 10:13 PM I use a x-pipe dual 3" exhaust with hooker super comp headers and 20" case 3" inlet/outlet offset dynomax hemi super turbos (buy them from torque tech usually to make sure I get the right one) they are aluminized so they aren't show perfect, and I blow them out about every 4 years, but they are QUIET for a 550+ hp/tq (realistic #'s, not puffed ones) and when put back to back on a dyno with these tiny spin tech 14" case square mufflers that had to be like 3" tall there was zero power difference.
Great flow, great sound (esp when I had my true dual system, w/o the x-pipe and those mufflers-- wow!) only issue is I blow the packing out every few years and they rattle so I have to relace one or both of them, but its a quick and easy job if you have an electric cutting wheel or sawzall.
IMHO, for the performance and quiet, this muffler is hard to beat. Its very much so more quiet because of my x pipe, but it was still quiet for a car that did 12's all day long on regular street tires (no DOT slicks, etc) and a pro touring look at 4020+lbs in street tire trim.
I really like these mufflers and would not use a different brand unless I could get the same sound, quiet, but with stainless steel and no blow out issues every 3-4 years.

mark2002 Oct 30th, 04, 10:45 PM I have a set of Flowmasters 40 series on my 69 Camaro 350 with a crossover pipe. They aren't too loud until I get on it a little, and then you can hear it growl a little. It sounds great at idle outside the car, and you can still hold a normal conversation inside. I have had them 3+ years and they are still as good as when I bought them.
Den's396 Oct 31st, 04, 9:13 AM I've got the 50 series on my 66 and they sound perfect. But your dealing with a old dog here, can't take all the noise inside like you young guy's. Plenty loud when I nail it and just right at cruseing speed.
bluechevelless Nov 1st, 04, 4:27 PM My bro is going to be getting some 50 series and putting on his truck, think im gonna see how they sound, but its gonna be hard to tell, hes got a little 305 in it and ive got the big 396, you know...
gearheads78 Nov 1st, 04, 4:37 PM I am very happy with the performance and sound of my Dynomax welded Ultraflos. Super quite at idle and are not even that loud down the track. I have x-pipe and full tailpipes. The wife likes the fact that pictures won't fall off the wall any more when I start it in the garage. :D
wes migletz Nov 1st, 04, 6:13 PM Last week I had a local muffler shop replace the ratty 2.0" exhaust system I had on my '59 with a dual 2 1/2" exhaust, with Dynomax Ultrafow mufflers. The car has a nice deep, mellow tone. It's actually quieter than the old, raspy-sounding 2.0" system, and the car pulls a lot harder on the top end.
Since I was so happy with the Dynomax ultraflow sound on my '59, I just ordered a 3.00" dual exhaust with an "X" pipe from www.pypesexhaust.com (http://www.pypesexhaust.com) for my '65 convertible. My GF will be driving the car and doesn't want it too loud. I had the mufflers upgraded to the Goerloch (sp?) mufflers, because they were recommended over the Ultraflows by the Pypes tech guy. I was told they outflowed the Dynomax Ultraflows and had a similar sound. The total cost, to my door, was $506, which is a lot cheaper than any of my quotes to have a mandrel bent system made locally for the car. Wes
Texas70 Nov 1st, 04, 6:41 PM Summit Turbos behind Summit headers. You spend approx. $100 (headers and mufflers) and get alot of bang for your buck ;)
Ron454 Nov 1st, 04, 7:02 PM On my Nova I use a DR. Gas 3" "X" pipe and Spin Tech mufflers. With 3" TA performance tailpipes that exit behind the rear wheels, this was just too cotten pickin loud. So I added a Dynomax 3" bullet right in the middle of the tailpipes and this mellowed it nicely.
At the drags, my car reads 88dBA on the decibel meter. We have street legal drags that run till 1:00 am and after 10 pm we have to be quieter than 90dBA. This is measured at half track, 50ft from the car.
I'm the only fast car running after 10 usually.
And it manages high tens from time to time.
I also agree that the mongo Dynomax 3" super turbo muffs that MadMarv mentioned are quite good.

f370vette Nov 1st, 04, 9:38 PM I just put a flowmaster American Thunder system on my 66 chevelle. The resulting sound is perfect, reminds me of an early Z with chambered exhaust, not too loud, just right.
young gun '71 Nov 2nd, 04, 11:02 AM my exhaust cost me all of $130 for my flowtech headers, pepboys cherry bomb turboII mufflers and a pair of 2 1/4" pipes that dump at the axle. the mufflers kinda stink after ~5000 miles, they get real loud inside the car but not much louder outside  maybe this month I'll buy me a set of 12" glasspacks and 3" pipes :D
prepass Nov 2nd, 04, 11:45 AM American Thunder flowmasters here. I love the sound, but it is somewhat aggressive. That's the way my car is suppossed to sound. Might not like it on a daily driver.
Bubba271 Nov 2nd, 04, 2:08 PM Pypes mufflers sound great and are cheap last forever.
68SS454 Nov 2nd, 04, 2:58 PM Dynomax Race Bullets :D tongue.gif
JOHN WILSON Nov 2nd, 04, 3:13 PM Another vote for Magnaflow. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
kjett Nov 2nd, 04, 3:21 PM My exhaust is real quiet given the power level of the engine. I have:
- Hooker Super Comp 2" primary/ 3.5" collector
- FlowMaster merge collectors
- Straightline Performance large case race mufflers
- 3" Torque Tech tail pipes
Check these guys out:

Not sure if they're still in business, but if they are they make a great muffler.
Check out the new Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 Series. There's lots of things that effect the sound (Cam, mandrel bent pipes, etc.), but somebody had the Delta Flows at CB'04 on a '66 and they sounded great!! He said they solved the interior droning problem that the old 40 series was infamous for.

Donnie1 Nov 2nd, 04, 4:19 PM Andy,
those were super 40's

soccerguy045 Nov 9th, 04, 12:22 PM I like my Hooker Aerochambers. They sound good if you're idling or getting on it. I only have a 2.25'' pipe system right now, true duals, and am anxious to hear what they sound like with a big block and 3'' piping.
Slowpoke70 Nov 9th, 04, 5:16 PM Taylor, do you happen to have a sound clip of the Aerochambers?
So far I'm pretty much decided on getting them, but I'd like to hear a clip of a V8 first. I heard one of a late model Chevy V6 that sounded downright mean! But no luck finding a V8 sound clip.
Thanks.
feedphillipnow Nov 9th, 04, 5:21 PM I have 2.25" Pipes with H pipe, Flowtech/Holley short headers and 40 Series Flowmasters, going through a mild 350...when it runs ;) 268 Comp Cam, not as thumpy as id like but it sounds really nice to me, H pipe and X pipe make a huge difference.
soccerguy045 Nov 9th, 04, 5:28 PM Sorry Enrique, I don't have a clip...but if I can get a way to record one I'll make a clip and send one your way.

Glenn Nov 9th, 04, 5:56 PM There is a sound bite on this page for Aero Chambers. http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/ES/ESHHM/Aero.html#Chevy
Slowpoke70 Nov 9th, 04, 6:12 PM That sound pretty sweet!
Taylor, if you get a chance send on my way, as I'd like to hear what they would sound like on an engine/system much like mine, thanks.
66chevyIISS Nov 9th, 04, 6:27 PM I have Aerochambers with 3" exhaust. No cross over and a small block, but you can hear it in this video smile.gif
