Has anyone tried to use the early factory smog pumps and re-route the air so that instead of supplying air to the exhaust manifolds, supplying it to the carb or aircleaner assembly. Would this work?? would there be too much turbulance? Or would it have no effect at all?

As a supercharger?...no affect,not enough volume.

They work like the old Judson vane S/Cer's I think??
It might work fine on a little bitty 3hp/B&S lawnmower motor.. You would have to check cubic inches of air pumped per rpm and match it rpm-wise to the little motor.
I mention this only b/c I know they are dragging hopped up B&S motors now which seems like a real hoot for a parents/kids thing!!

Anyone ever use them as a vacuum pump. To evacuate the crankcase? I know they sell bucks up ones and I think they started out using OE units but how long do they live on the street and is it worth it? Just something I was thinking about....

I experimented with a smog pump last year. Used one designed for a Ford van because it has both intake and exhaust fittings making it easier to plumb. I could pull 13-14 in. of vacuum with it. Saw no real changes in ET or MPH. Probably because engine wasn't built to take advantage of it. Did keep oil leaks to a min. though.
