Hi guys.
I have a weird one for you. 72 El Camino. The dome light randomly goes on! The car has a NOS Gm light switch, aftertmarket dome light switches and an aftermarket replacement dome light. All stock wiring in stock locations. I was walking by the car the other day, and the dome light came on! I didn't touch the car. ???? The first thing I thought was that I had screwed the switches into the pillars too far. I backed them out to no avail. I am lost. Does power run to each pin switch then when the door is opended it completes the ground and sends power to the dome light? If I were to check the voltage at the dome light with the doors closed should I get nothing? How does this system work? I have resorted to pulling the dome light bulb out but sure would like to solve this annoying probelm. Thank You to everyone that can offer some advice.

The dome light is fed from the CLK LTR CTSY fuse via a orange wire that has power all the time (so yes, with the doors closed it should have power). The ground side of the dome lamp is the white wire and goes to the door pins and the headlamp switch. When the white wire sees ground, (either by opening the doors or turning the headlamp switch knob) the dome lamp comes on. This is how the dome circuit works. For troubleshooting, there are several possibilities, the doors might not be pushing in the door pin switches enough, aftermarket replacement dome light housing is screwed in to tight (another member had this problem, it was posted here before in electrical) headlamp switch knob is turned to far. Also the drivers side door pin switch has a black wire for the key buzzer, if this wire is grounded somewhere (like a frayed wire) it could cause the dome lamp to come on.
