Disclaimer up front: I know nothing or at least next-to-nothing about transmissions. I guess this is my car telling me it's time to learn. Yesterday, my 72 started having problems shifting; it takes a long time for it to shift from 1st to 2nd, and even longer to shift from 2nd to 3rd. I really have to step on the gas to get it to shift. And then it sounds like it's not downshifting properly either.
I did some searching thru the forum, but a lot of it went right over my head, but a couple times it was advised to change/fix/adjust a vacuum hose to solve this? Also, does fluid have anything to do with this? And what fluid do you recommend?
This is my daily driver, so I want to make sure it runs smooth correctly. Thanks in advance!

Sound like the vacuum hose came off the modulator. The modulator helps determine part throttle shift points. The hose could of came off at the trans. end or at the carburator. The modulator could of gone bad also. The modulater sticks out of the trans case near the bottom, not sure witch side. It will have a small nipple for a vacuum hose. Another possibility is the downshift cable stuck. The cable connects to the carb. linkage and goes into the case of the trans.

both the cable and the vac mod. are located on the pass side of the tranny. The mod. is located near the back of the pan and the cable goes in near where the fill tube enters the case.

Awesome. I love this board. Thanks guys, I will check everything today and let you know.
Curious, if I do have a bad modulator and need to replace, how much is that? And is that something I can/should do myself or no?

yeah, it is very easy to replace. Pull one bolt which holds a bracket (similiar to a distributor hold down), pull it out and put the new one in. The modulators arent very expensive and can be purchased at any parts house. Take your old one in with you to make sure it is similiar. Also it should have directions on how to adjust for earlier or later shifts. You may try adjusting yours to see if that helps. The screw is located inside the vacuum line hook up on the modulatror.

I opened the hood last night and lo and behold, there it was -- a hose w/o a home. I plugged that little guy back in and Shazam!... transmission shifting fine again. I'm so glad to have a forum like this that saves me having to take time off work or wait for the weekend to go to some shop and pay for something like this that's so easy to fix.
Thanks again!
