Hey everyone,
I am putting together a budget 427 for the Camaro. I already have a good 454 short block and I'm looking for a 396/427 steel crank. What should I expect to pay for one? Will it be a drop-in deal with a balance job?
Thanks!

The going rate for a STD steel #6223 GM crank up this way is $75-150. If your going to balance the assembly one of the best places Ive found is out of 366/427 tall deck truck blocks, they run the same #6223 steel crank.

What machine shop work is necessary to place a 427 crank in a '68 396 2-bolt block?

396 & 427 use the same crankshaft. Difference is the bore 396 = 4.095", 402 = 4.125", 427 = 4.25".

All 6223 cranks are not created equal. There is a differnce between the ones you see at competitionproducts ( $250) and say an old 427 crank. Hipo are cross drilled and chamfered. Least mine was.

WHile a steel crank is always nice, don't be afraid of a cast 396-427 crank either. I've NEVER seen one break and as a teenager my first 10.90's motor had a cast crank in it. Ran it for three years untill I upgraded my valve train(roller cam set up and rect heads)and change tout the crank, just in case.
It is what I call a "welfare" motor. My present motor in my 69 is a poor man's 427 and it hauls for the mear $500 I have in it. All good parts but mostly second hand except for rings, bearings and gaskets.

The only advice I can get is go for the steel ( forged ) crank, the price realy isnt that differnt between the two.
