: HELP! Installing arm rests....screws don't line up w/holes!!!

I'm installing the driver side and passenger side arm rests on my 2 door 71 Chevelle. On the passenger side I have the two screws in that go above and below where the door handle goes already installed, but I have them not screwed in all the way.

Now I can't seem to get the rear screw to get in the hole. It misses the hole by centimeters...I.E. when the screw is put in it hits the metal in the door forward of the hole. Foward, as in more towards the front of the car.

The arm rests i am installing are not original to the car, but they're not repops either....they're from another 70-72 Chevelle.

Short of me having to drill a whole new hole, how can I get the silly screw to get in the hole?

(gosh I feel like Happy Gilmour on his worst golf day)

Thanks.

Dawg, Try taking the two screws out and checking the hole alignment with a pick or scratchawl. With two screws in and loose,if they are angled slightly the rear screw hole could be behind the screw tip,as you mentioned. Steve

You could line up the arm rest with the imprint on the door panel (from where it has been mounted) and run an ice pick in to find the holes. If you can get one but not the other, just drill another hole and be done with it.

The pick is one of the upholsterer's best friends...:)

Thanks, I dunno if there's a difference in the Camaros/Novas/Chevelles when it comes to the arm rests, I ended up having to drill a new hole in the metal for both arm rests. The old holes were not that far off but just enough to make it not work.
