: Looking for reccomendations for places to go for our 30th anniversary
Gazzer Sep 23rd, 07, 8:14 PM Hi Folks,
I'm looking for reccomendations for places to go for our 30th anniversary. We are coming up on our 29th in a couple of months and I want to find somewhere nice for the 30th and get it booked in plenty of time. A nice beach front secluded, no screaming kids kind of place would suit us the best.
Any thoughts ?
Cheers,
-Garry

quikss Sep 23rd, 07, 8:17 PM Fiji?? Secluded beach front, most likely not to many kids, romantic so you likely "get some":D
If that costs too much, try Hawaii, any island but oahu will serve your needs. Oahu is kind of like a very warm chicago with a much better beach.

Jimmy P Sep 23rd, 07, 8:25 PM Oh yeah! I spent 8 weeks there. Awesome, fantastic place! You'll score major points, trust me. Best hotel amenities I've ever experienced. It's NOT a normal hotel, it's a resort place with mind blowing details. The fuel injected and blown 572's of small resort hotels.
Stay here: http://www.avilalafondahotel.com/
Go here: http://sycamoresprings.com/
It's 7 miles from San Luis Obispo with a multitude of different restaraunts. Next to Pismo Beach where you can rent just about anything on wheels.

Visited Avila beach in August, and partied heavy in San Luis Obispo (SLO). BUT, with 90 percent of the College kids gone..many bars
savage71chevelless Sep 23rd, 07, 11:51 PM Stay at the Waikaloa resort on the Kohala coast of the Big Island, awesome place, simply wonderful. Went there for my honeymoon and want to go back
Malibu Jimbu Sep 24th, 07, 12:32 AM Marriott Beach Club in Kaui !
jrfan8bud Sep 24th, 07, 1:21 AM I don't have any suggestions on where to go but I just wanted to say congratulation on 29 years! That is a long time and I wish you many more happy years together. I just celerbrated my 15th anniversary on Wednesday.
Brian_d Sep 24th, 07, 2:03 AM Dreams hotel & resort in cancun. 2 beaches, 2 pools, dolphin swim, 4 restraunts, 6 or 7 bars, all inclusive - food, room service, booze! Every night they put out a bottle of champane next to the jacuzy!

johncolvin Sep 24th, 07, 10:50 AM Congrats on the 30 years. I honeymooned here lat year- http://palaceresorts.com/Resorts/CozumelPalace/Index.asp
All inclusive, jacuzzi in the room, mini bar, 2 pools, swim up bar, good food (3 places to eat & bar food). You can take a boat ride to the main land if you want. We were there for 7 days and did absolutely nothing - it was perfect. Great snorkeling and diving. No kids, all adults. We went mid October and the place was empty. It is hurricane season this time of year, but you can get insurance on stuff like that. Not much of the night life, club thing, if that is what you are into. Resort has nightly bands/cultural plays, etc.
BillsCamino Sep 24th, 07, 11:32 AM I guess it all depends on what time of the year the anniversary is and what budget??
Xtreme70SS396 Sep 24th, 07, 1:36 PM Kuaii, no place like it. Well, except maybe Fiji - but it's in the US!!
Bowtie-72 Sep 24th, 07, 2:30 PM Johncolvin was right-moon palace was nice.
If you want some people around, but not the spring break crowd, Ixtapa is nice. There's stuff to do, but it's not a huge party. Stay at one of the nicer places, though. We were at a smaller resort (all inclusive), and even though the place was nice, cheap, and intimate, the food wasn't too good. The bigger places all had better food. The beach is nice and long, and there's other things to do in neighboring towns too.
marooned Sep 24th, 07, 2:42 PM I took the wife to Maui for our 25th. Stayed at the Ritz Carlton. had a great time. Did the whole thing thru Expedia .com. Second long trip with Expedia. Excellent both times.

Congrats on the 29 years, harder to do these days for some reason.

rocks66ss Sep 24th, 07, 3:43 PM We went to Aruba for our 30th last year. Thats a nice place to get away to. We are trying to find and excuse to go back. It's a Dutch island off the northern coast of Venezuela.

johncolvin Sep 24th, 07, 5:18 PM I used http://www.cheapcaribbean.com/ No issues with the booking, I called to confirm and they were really professional & friendly - They even gave a room upgrade (beach front view)because it was our honeymoon (probably for anniversery's as well). Free shuttle to and from the airport. Our trip was $3000 - jacuzzi room, travel, etc. It is Mexico, so you'll need the 'ol passport.
No, I don't work for them, but I'll use them again
Bunz-T Sep 24th, 07, 5:34 PM Ask your wife not us, she is the one who will have been by your side for 30. Do not take for granted that she may prefer simple over grandious. Just had my 30th May 13, yes a Friday 13th. After trying to make something really big out of it we realized all we want is another 30 with each other . Many times we overlook what really makes our wives happy.
pdq67 Sep 24th, 07, 8:40 PM You got the bucks, then a beach it is!!
Otherwise, please consider a vacation/30th anniversary to Branson, MO!
Fly into KCI and pick up a rental car and head south!
It's going to be pretty this time of year as we go into fall and the SHOW'S are GREAT!!
And fwiw, the home folk's are great people, imho!!!!!
And congrat's to you and your's!!

BULKSS Sep 24th, 07, 9:14 PM Hmm Gaz my guess would be Nashville Tenn for CB08.
Cameano Sep 24th, 07, 10:14 PM My 20th is next year. I'm puttin' away some money for a trip to Waikiki. :D
Chevl_Steve Sep 24th, 07, 10:33 PM My wife and I did our 30th on a cruise to Alaska. Our first cruise.
Go before mid May or after Mid September and you'll avoid the kiddies and teens.
No Beach, but very pretty, semi-isolated, luxury dining......although outside the dining room the food on the Carnival ship was not impressive. I'd try another line next time.
Very romantic and a very nice getaway.

We went here about 5 years ago. It was beyond nice, no kids allowed, food was great, nice beach and swim up bar, all inclusive, swim with the Dolphins within walking distance. I think I'm talking myself into going back! :D
manganos Sep 25th, 07, 9:37 PM Yep...the wife and I had our honeymoon at Moon Palace in Cancun. I was 23 she was 24. I did not want "kids" running around and it was a great experience. I'd go back again in a heartbeat. It wasn't cheap but we had a great room and all the ammenities. I think we paid $3000 a piece including airfare from Maryland. BTW Congrats

Good suggestion. Our 30th is next year and my wife is already researching. Alaska, Mediterranean, etc. We've been to Oahu and Maui, Dominican Republic, Western Carib cruise. Going to Cancun this Sunday. I'll let her find the trip she wants, I'm ok with going almost anywhere, almost.
Gazzer Sep 26th, 07, 9:32 AM Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Since it's December when we will go and how December is is wet, dark and cold here in the PNW, we really want to go somewhere warm and preferably a beach. Some of the places you guys suggest sound nice but I'm afraid some of the resort type places will have everyone laying around the pool like sardines. Last year we drove south from Cancun and rented a villa right on the beach. Had been there once before. In between Hurricane Wilma changed the beach to where it's no longer as nice as it used to be. This is why we are looking for something new.
Thanks for the congrats as well :)
If there are more suggestions, please keep em coming.
Cheers, Garry
BillsCamino Sep 26th, 07, 9:50 AM Garry,
If your wife is like mine, she loves the beaches.
One of our favorites is 7 Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. The weather is great there year round...small island and easy to get around with a rental. We've been there 6-7 times...short trip from here.
BTW, British influence...they drive on the left side of the road which to me is very cool.

Bill, since you have been there as many times as you have, where do you reccomend to stay ? Is there some nice quaint and comfortable places or are they all big resorts.
Feel free to PM me as well if you like.
Thanks, -Garry
Lapper Sep 26th, 07, 2:05 PM Sounds like you've hit a lot of the "hot spots" so to speak, and if the Mediterranean is on the table I would most definitely suggest Greece. So much to do and see, beautiful beaches, great food, awesome historical sites, incredibly romantic. You can cruise around to a couple different islands, big and small depending on your preference. Athens is incredible.
That's my two cents.

Big resorts...the Westin Casuarina Resort is our personal favorite.
Small, "quaint" (but remote) places... focus in the Rum Point area. Even small homes directly on the water are available for rent.
If Europe is a consideration...go to Rome!! My favorite city in the world. Savoy Hotel.
Xplantdad Sep 26th, 07, 4:01 PM How about Jamaica? I hear that the Sandals resort is nice. I am hoping that for our 20th Anniversary (next April) that we can get there. If you don't already have a passport...you might want to get one right away. I hear the back up obtaining them is fairly long... :)

You'll be fine there, as long as you stay in the resort. Step outside the gate, though, and it's a whole 'nother world. I was walking down the street with a buddy there in '92, and we walked across an intersection, go 20 yards down the next block, and figured out we'd reached the end of the touristy section. We turned around, walked back to the intersection, and everything was all good again. ;)

Very True! Even more so now with the recent hurricane damage. :(
b-man Sep 26th, 07, 8:32 PM what ever you do...
keep it simple.
spend the time together and not getting dragged all over the place.
firestone13914 Sep 26th, 07, 11:35 PM I have only really been to one place like what you are after, but it was AWSOME! My mom and step dad took us to Costa Rica for a vacation. We stayed near a beach called Ocotal beach. It was right by a town called Coco. I would not recommend staying on Coco beach or in Coco though, it is a little dirty. The beach we stayed on was anything but. We stayed in a 7 room condo (there were 17 of us with all the siblings, husbands, wives and kids but the condo was ours alone) with a full staff and 3 meals a day prepared. There are a ton of things to do in that area from snorkeling to hikes through live volcanoes to relaxing on the soft black sand beach.
this is a website to the villas we stayed in. These are not the exact ones, but they are connected to these, look very similar, and they are owned by the same people.

Here are some pictures from our trip:
This is one interesting thing, they have monkeys running around there like we have squrils here.

This is Ocotal Beach. It was about a 3 minute walk from where we were staying. As you will see, compared to Coco, it is much cleaner and more private.

This is Coco Beach it is rather dirty and crowded. This is a little unfair because this is new years day which is the biggest partying day of the year for this town. It is a ~5 minute drive from Ocotal Beach.

Although I thought this place would be really hard to beat, my mom actually said she liked Aruba better, so that is something else to think about.
Also remember in December it is 85-90 F every day and always sunny.

tpshea Sep 28th, 07, 4:13 PM My wife and I went to St Lucia for our 25th. A Sandal's all-inclusive adults only resort. We had a great time. Beautiful weather, GREAT food and everywhere we went on the island was fun. Here is the view from just outside the door of our room. This was the end of March when it was still A$$ freezing cold in Columbus.

St. Lucia is very nice too. Did you ever sit on the beach next to the airport and watch the planes land?

I popped in there last Wednesday and Thursday for some work, Mike. Had about 4 hours between notice 'til I was on the plane. By the time we got done Thursday, and hauled back to the airport, they were boarding the plane. Didn't even get to pick up a shirt at the HD dealer there, drove right on by. I'll visit on the ferry soon. ;)
