13.3x e.t.'s @ ~ 104 mph.

....Lonnie, do you have some more of that stuff?

'64 - just remember that it is all for fun. Be happy with whatever you start out with for e.t./mph - it will get quicker/faster the longer you spend working over all the details.

You might be suprised how well it will run without shifting it above 6,000 rpm. I would start out with a first pass shifting at 5,500 rpm, then try 5,700 rpm. If quicker/faster shifting at 5,700 rpm then try 5,900. You will find the point at which it noses over, although I would reccomend keeping it under 6,500 rpm.

Good luck. Thomas

Sorry Bomber, I don't share. tongue.gif

How much does a alum headed SB 64 weigh? 3300 without driver? I don't see A/C or anything else that will add weight.

I mistakenly read he had a hyd roller cam, but still. A stock headed 383 in a heavier car will go 104mph. He has a great combo with a lot of potential. EASILY 110+ with a decent tune.

64chevlle- Very nice job! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Not that it will make any difference, but do you have 3.42 or 3.36 gears?

I'm anxious to see how it will perform... May play a little with timming and shift points at the track as well... My thought was to bring tire press down to about 25-27 pounds.(indy firehawks) any other suggestions??

Lonnie, actually I'm glad you don't share - since the last of my 'stash' burned up in the '70's I think I've been better off!

'64(name?), airing those Firehawks down will slow you down with even less traction. I think you will find ~ 29 or 30 psi to be about ideal, possibly even 31/32 psi. Avoid the waterbox, drive around it so that you don't needlessly fill your tire grooves with water - which will then track and drip water all the way up to the starting line! I never found regular street tires to gain anything from a waterbox style burnout. Instead just do a quick cleanoff dry spin of the tires and pull up to starting line. Proper manners is that you should pull up and trip the first pre-stage light and wait to trip the stage light until your opponent has tripped his pre-stage light. If your opponent has already tripped his pre-stage light then you should pre-stage, then stage right after that to let him know you are ready. *Important* avoid ALL temptation to load the converter up against the brake - instead you want to leave practically at idle. As soon as you see the last yellow light come on let your brake off (use two feet, one for brake, the other on the accelerator), then stab the throttle HALF WAY down, then quickly roll the throttle to the floor (easier said than done). Practice a little on this somewhere safe before you get to the track, I promise you will be quicker launching this way on street tires with your combo. Do NOT wait for the green light, your body's natural reaction time needs you to start your launch as soon as you see the last yellow light come on.

Race on, Thomas

Dang, Craig predicted nicely - my prediction got close within a tenth and 1 mph. Congrats for following through and posting the results. I'm not sure what to make of your reaction time -does Wichita consider .000 or .500 to be perfect sportsman lights?

So what do you think you will work on next to get the car down the track more quickly? What rpms did you actually shift? What tire pressure did you use? What about the rest of your dragstrip strategy, launch technique etc.

OK here is all the details... Car weighed 3160 w/out me I'm a big guy so 3460 total...

I shifted at 5500 first pass which yeilded a 13.35 @ 104.5mph with #30 in rear tires.. The last run in which I posted the slip was same tire press shifting at 6000...I left off idle trying to roll into the gas but almost a smash. It had a little spin in it then I could feel it hook. I did not touch the carb or timing while I was there tonight but will next time to tinker.
Gotta pull my carb apart to check what jets are stock in my raod deamon 725??? timing is 18 inital and 36 total I believe.. I want a 12 sec street car on street tires, a buddy of mine offered me slicks but I want it on radials...lol
Any other suggestions?? Was on the verge of ordering a electric fan but not sure if I would gain any off this. Thought about trying the front shock trick I read on here too.. Back shocks are auto zone specials as well..
Wichita goes off of .000 reacton time.. my RT were .198, .072, .038,.112, .000

Your thoughts ?? I want 12 secs on radials and I will be happy....lol

Get a pair of drag radials..you need to concentrate on your 60 ft./traction and nothing else, and you will have your 12 second timeslip. You will not break into the 12's using Firestone Firehawks.A low 1.8X 60 ft. will get you into the 12's
Again,nice job graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Low 13's with mild gear and a 383 is impressive!

I think you can squeek into the 12's with those Firehawks, drag radials would make you more consistent.

One of the things I want you to check is how quickly your posi engages. For this you only need an astute observer. Check that both tires light up almost simultaneously both during the burnout, and when launching. It is a common source of traction trouble that one wheel spins for a bit before the other does. If this is so for your car, a fresh tight posi wil chop your 60' times. Next up is tuning your advance curve and carb setup. Along with that some suspension work should help. Do you fresh bushings? Boxed lower arms? Adjustable uppers with relocation brackets? Sway bars - front? - rear?

Tell us how your runs felt: bog off line after initial spin etc. - anything you can think of to describe how it pulls.
