: Fuel Pump for BBC
feedphillipnow Jan 4th, 05, 7:20 PM Hey guys, Whats the part number for a good fuel pump? I was going to run a stock type Carter, the one I found was the M6901, its like $60. I dont know I can get a Holley for the same price, stay with Carter?
Holley 12-835
Pretty much same stats, pretty nice price.
feedphillipnow Jan 4th, 05, 7:30 PM 60GPH though, too low? It says for mildly modified or stock big blocks. I need a pushrod also, not sure what kind to get. Thanks guys...
mc71454 Jan 4th, 05, 11:11 PM What camshaft do you have? Unless it is Billet, a standard hardened pushrod will be fine. Get the 120 gph pump (4889), and definetly go with the Carter.

feedphillipnow Jan 5th, 05, 4:31 PM What about a Carter M6901?
I did a search for the Holley 12-454-11 Ive heard a few bad things and a few good things. It looked like a good pump. I hear people say Carter is junk, and also Holley is junk. Different strokes for different folks! Leaves me very unsure on what to run. I need mass opinions graemlins/beers.gif

do you ever search before you post??
if you would take the time to do a search you will find that the carter is the preferred mechanical pump here at TC, mainly because of Tom's advice. as a matter of fact i bought my carter 172 from Tom, nascar doesnt use them for nothing!
the carter pumps have been around for years and are very reliable and rebuildable, if they will survive the abuse that nascar puts on them they should be damn near bulletproof on a street car.
Edit:
this post look familiar?
Holley Fuel Pump/ Carter ...Choices (http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/4/23686.html?)
feedphillipnow Jan 5th, 05, 7:05 PM Still the 4889 over the carter 6901? Carter it is then...
RatONaStick Jan 5th, 05, 7:12 PM i think that might depend on what carb you're running and what fuel pressure you need.
the 4889 and 6901 are the same pump except for the operating psi.
the 4889 runs 7 to 8.5psi
the 6901 runs 5.5 to 7.5psi
the 4889 will work fine with a holley carb, not sure about an edelbrock.
feedphillipnow Jan 5th, 05, 7:24 PM Im going to run a 1407 Edelbrock, its a 750cfm... manual choke. Despite the numerous Holley carb fans here smile.gif I wont be running one anytime soon... not sure what kind of pressure this carb likes... i'll look it up again
feedphillipnow Jan 7th, 05, 4:08 PM Ok, I did some checking and founding zilch. I'll be running a 1407 Edelbrock carb. The 4889 Carter pump a no go? Brandon, you mentioned it may not like working with an edelbrock carb...
RatONaStick Jan 7th, 05, 6:01 PM Phil
i took a look over at edelbrocks site and found some info.
Edelbrock Performer Series Carburetors can operate within a fuel pressure range of 4 to 9 p.s.i. However, we highly recommend fuel pressure be 5.5 to 6.0 p.s.i. If flooding occurs, check your fuel pump pressure and make sure it is within the proper range. Also check for dirt in the needle and seat, which can prevent them from sealing and lead to flooding. going by what they recommend id go with the carter m6901.
although i do have an edelbrock on my biscayne, and i have had it on the chevelle, i havent had the eddy on the velle since i put the carter 172 on(its rated at 7 to 8.5psi). so i cant say for sure if it will withstand that kind of psi.
other than the psi, the m6901 and the m4889 are the same pump. heck, even the carter 172 is the same except for the inlet/outlet sizes.
feedphillipnow Jan 7th, 05, 6:50 PM Thanks Brandon, I couldnt find that detailed info in the edelbrock site, I poked around but no real luck. SWEET, well I'll go with the 6901 then, if it sucks I'll just swap it out.

mc71454 Jan 7th, 05, 7:11 PM Thanks Brandon for helping out, I lost track of the post.
6901 with the Edelbrock as suggested graemlins/thumbsup.gif
4889 with a Holley

thats sweet, i had noticed you mentioned you were a steeler fan in a post over in bench racing. i was going to reply but completely forgot about it.
being born in western Pa ive been a steeler fan since birth. unfortunately i was born in 77, so i dont remember any of the superbowl years. but i still have my steeler baby clothes and terrible towel!
like you said, barring any dumb stuff they should go all the way. but i gotta say this is the best team ive seen since i was old enough to remember, seems like the dumb stuff has been at a bare minimum this year.
looks like they have a real good chance to get "one for the thumb"!
