: Are Ross Pistons Any Good?

Hey guys, I think Ross is just about one of the last major piston companies I haven't tried yet. I have been considering using my cherry 400 sbc bare block to build a 420 stroker.

I was just about to give up and just build a 405 because pistons were also $700 for what I needed. Then John Wilson helped me out and found a set of Ross pistons for my setup that are about $550. 4.145" bore, 3.875" stroke, 6.0" rods, flat top piston.

So, are Ross pistons at the same quality level as other top names that I've used like JE/SRP, Arias, Venolia, Speed-Pro (TRW), etc?

Thanks guys!!

Ross pistons has been around for many years and over the years I have used a few sets myself with no problems and a few shops I do bussiness with use them as well with no problems.

Higher end than TRW, comparable to SRP/JE, a little lower end than Arias/Venolia. imho.

Cable,

I used a set of Ross pistons in my old 383 SBC. Very nice piston. They are comparible in quality to the JE pistons I'm puting in the new 445 SBC. I'll try to find a picture to send you.

6" rod,3.875 Stroker crank and use this piston. Then mill the piston top to acheive "0" deck hght.

I have also used them for both shelf & customs on occasion & they have an outstanding product in my opinion.
The quality is on a par with the best out there.
Been around forever & have always had a good product.

the only comment I have about Ross is the cold clearance. The last set I used (which admittedly was at least 10 years ago) required .007 cold clearance. This is not a big deal in a race car with open exhaust but they sound like a cross between an old diesel and a bucket of rocks being shaken if there's mufflers. The clearance was determined by the type of aluminum IIRC. You might ask them about it if nasty noise would be a problem for you. They may have changed alloys or machining techniques or something that eliminates this problem sometime over the years.
