: Front Sway Bar Question

The two attached pictures are of the new front sway bar on my 67 chevelle ss396. I have the bar installed loosely and both links are hitting or into the spindles. This is a 1 1/8" bar and the only modifications that have been done is reaming the mounting holes for the bushing brackets about a 1/4" due to the diameter of the bar.

Is this bar installed right and what do you do about the links in their present location? The body is off the car. What do I do here??????????

Thanks
Larry

Put the weight on the car, tighten them up, and see how it looks then. Seems pretty close already, though.

Cannot put any real weight yet, body is at the painters and the rear-end won't be finished for a week. The best that can be done when the rear-end is complete is a rolling frame and not sure if that is enough weight. Thanks

Sure looks too wide to me. Weight on the suspension is not going change things very much. The spindles could move out some, depends on where they are hanging now. Is there any weight on the suspension now or is hanging down?

finally-- there is no weight on the suspension. What confuses me here is the height of the links. I have a 66 GTO with a front sway bar and the links are about 2/3 as tall as the ones pictures here. I am going to put front tires on tomorrow and lower the front end to the ground (rear still on stands) and see if that changes the geometry any.

Thanks

I see what you mean now about the length of the links - doesn't look right.

I'd double-check with the manufacturer.

Seems to me I had the same question on mine when I put exactly the same thing on years ago....CPP? Looks the same anyway. Tighten it up completely since it looks like you've got about 1/2" left down to go. It is close, but it should fit. The reason it's so high is because the long spacer allows the geometry of the bar to be flattened in horizonal plane and work better since it's not biased upwards or downwards.

cobaltchev67- the sway came from Matt's Classic Bowties and I would presume it is a CPP brand. Am going to see today what putting tires and putting what weight the frame has on it and see what happens.

Thanks

Once you have the car finished, set it down in the position it will be for driving. Then simply cut the end links to the correct length so things fit. Length of the end links only matters for fitting the car suspension, not for the functionality of the swaybar. Most aftermarket end links are "generic" and aren't right for your car. Just make them right with a hacksaw.

Ditto here. Just had to do this on my '71. I went to 3 different parts stores and asked for end links for my stock setup and all 3 showed me a different length setup! The variation from the shortest to longest was nearly 3/4"!! I ended up trimming 1/2" from the spacer and bolt of my set of Moog links.

mine was hitting the spindles before I put weight on the supension. factory f41 bar. I bet it will be ok.

Been there, done that. They're all over the place in length but all say, yes this is for a XX Chevelle. Cut them to the correct length once you have weight on the front end. The part of the sway bar that extends back to the a-arm should be relatively level to the ground when the car is complete and sitting on the ground.

For what it is worth, I ordered a new set of end links from Ground Up and I am going to see if they are any different when I get them, if not hacksaw here I come.

Thanks for all the information.
