Well after a long hard decision, I have a new OPG black interior for the 67 Camino. Come #3!! or high water this thing is going to be maroon exterior.

So now the delima of interior paint. Any of you with original maroon 66 or 67 and black interior,,,,,,, What is the interior paint (metal parts). Is it black or maroon??? Any pictures of a original Maroon 66 or 67 with black interior,, looking for painted interior surfaces like dash, inner door, kick panels (and especially) any El Camino's and the area behind the seats and cab corners.

TIA

Maybe this is a question for the bodyshop forum, but is the interior paint the same as exterior? WHat I mean is ,, isn't interior paint a low gloss, especially on the dash where you would have a horrible glare on the windshield?

Thanks Jerry. In the construction photo's of your 67 on chevells-ss it looks like the doors and door jamb's are red. I guess that's what I'm looking for. Where is the break from body color to black? Is it the windless trim? I've been searching gallerys all over and no one seems to show much interior other than seats/dash and console.

The break is the weatherstrip around the door. The top of the dash and windshield pillar should be "0" gloss paint. The top of the doors and quarter should be 60% gloss paint along with the rest of the interior. There are those who will disagree with this but I have the Oct 66 Chevrolet Service News bulletin that shows the 1967 Refinish Paint Charts for the exterior and interior with the Ditizler, Rinshed-Mason, and DuPont #s. By the way, the charts do not show any interior gloss paint at all.

Thank you SO MUCH Thomas. That is exactly what I've been searching for.

Now if I can just get the local paint house to cooperate and get the 'right' paint.

I totaly agree with elcamino66. No gloss. You can shoot black lacquer on all the surfaces and add flattener for the 0 gloss on the upper dash by the windsheild.

So can I go to my local paint supply house and tell them I want 60% gloss black, and "0" gloss black?? Or do I have to have some number to 'explain' to them what I want. I do know they are not the brightest. I asked for the underhood black (which I found out later is 60% gloss) and they gave me a quart of just plain gloss black enamel.

If you buy black lacquer and spray it on your dash you will have the right gloss. You will have to add flattener to the same paint to dull it out even more for you upper dash by the windshield.

So I take it there is no paint # I can give the supply house to get a quart of the right sheene in acryllic enamel or urathane? It must be black laquer with a 'flatner'. Sorry, my knowledge is EXTREAMLY limited in body and paint work.

You want to buy a quart PPG (Ditzler) #9300 black lacquer and some flattener for it. You will also need a gallon of lacquer thinner. Mix the black and thinner per instructions and spray your parts that are to be 60%. Done. Now add some flattener to the same mix and spray a test piece and let dry. If the flatness looks right to you, spray the upper dash area by the windshield. That's it......no buffing or rubbing.

PERFECT, thanks for the #'s and insight.
I'm going to be changing the color of the consol, strato-seat backs and bottom. Seat parts are original metal as is most of the console. But some of the console parts are plastic. Any special prep for those 'textured' finished stamped metal? Just scrub it spotless, give it a nice wipedown with laquer thinner, and spray the 60%???
Should I look into the new 'plastic paints' available in rattle can, or just spray it with the laquer?

Thanks again for all the help.

Where in Arizona are you located? I just completed a restoration on my 67 Malibu and found quite a few sources for OEM materials. Let me know if I can be of help......

Don I'm in Casa Grande, but my guess is SpaceAge in Mesa is going to be the only place I can get the right paint. We have 3 paint supply houses here that cater to the local body shops. But they treat the individual like we have no business even attempting our own work. i.e. one of them wanted to charge me $3 per disk for 6" 3M self adhesive 80g sanding disks. WHat's that old saying,, it WAS night time when i was born,, but it wasn't LAST NIGHT.
Even at $2.50 a gallon for gas I'll be driving to Phx for a $0.30 sheet of sandpaper before I buy anything from those bastages. Haven't tried Napa, they have some decent people, but I'm not sure who really makes the Martin-Senour line of paints, or if they can cross the PPG number. We'll see.

Marv,
Nope, wrong guess, SpaceAge does not carry lacquer, there is a place in Phoenix call PRO 1, they are a PPG distributor and carry a full line of products from paint to paper and everything in between. They also carry and can supply you with OEM lacquer products and can mix whatever color you want to the correct gloss percentage, I used there products when re-doing my Chevelle (more user friendly when doing the work in my home garage then epoxy products and dry quicker). There telephone number is 602-482-2536, ask for Barry.

You should buy some paint stripper from your textured metal seat parts and the metal parts of you console. Strip the paint and lighty prime before spraying your black paint. That way you won't sand the grain out or fill it with paint.

Any advice on painting the textured plastic parts??

Marv,

First clean them with soap and HOT water and a good stiff brush, then use a grease and wax remover prior to painting. I used SEM Landau Black #15013 and the results are excellent.......added new chrome trim around the seat back edges and they look like new.

Marv,
If 100% originality is not important to you, I found that a satin black for all interior metal surfaces really looks fantastic (e.g. console, seatbacks, upper doors, dash, etc.) It matches really well with the vinyl. Have had nothing but compliments about it despite its non-originality...just a thought.

And here is another compliment Mike,, that DOES look GREAT. This thing is far from a accurate, purist restoration, but more of a modern day 're-creation' of how the car 'would have been' built in todays world of technology. i.e. the 327 is the stock block small journal 327 with a few rotating assembly updates ;) ..., and now fitted with E-tec heads, Holley Commander MPFI, custom hydraulic roller cam from Jay Allen, serpentine belt drive assembly,,, trans is a 700r4 from Jake, Console has been updated with the proper shift gate and lenses for the R4 trans, the DakotaDigital dash is outfitted with the proper R4 gear position lights, and the shifter is fitted with gear position switch to operate it. Even sent the console clock to Dakota digital to have it retro fitted with a clock to match the dash guages. So original.... not by a long shot but!!!! Trying to create a nice flow of original/retro/hi-tec really has me really scratching my head on how to do this. And being a complete color change both exterior and interior really makes it tough!

You'll like the 700R4. I did the same conversion, but with a 396 and it rocks! 2500 stall with OD, TransGo shift kit, all new clutches and corvette servo, etc. Got the console lens from ShiftWorks and modded my own detent plate. TV cable inkage at the carb from BowTie Overdrives makes it painless.
Best of luck!
