65ss Aug 24th, 99, 10:22 PM Looks like you have a nice car there but did Maaco align the hood or did someone else do it .Sure looks like Maaco quality to me.

malibu 396 Aug 24th, 99, 10:47 PM I would never bring a car to maaco ever again.I had a bad experience. If you like fisheyes, solvent pops, overspray, and very poor quality paint then I guess I'd recommend them but Im sorry If you like your car spend a few extra bucks and have someone who cares about the job they perform do it.Ive never heard of a shop that does paint jobs for 189.00 to be very good. just my 2cents
chev-hell Aug 25th, 99, 2:34 AM My Sport hood was not very good to begin with (i bought it used and all rusty) and i just kinda put it on and have'nt aligned it yet as for the roof stripes that was my idea, i thought without a padded top it would look stupid without and actually it really looks good with em, the color scheme makes them very subtle, this is my 2nd maaco car (first was an 84 vette) and this shop takes for ever but will do a good job if you don't want their $299 special. jk

tom wurm Aug 25th, 99, 7:58 AM Many years ago I restored a VW beetle and had the car painted at Maaco. I did all the body work and they just sprayed the paint. The paint turned out very good. I think the quality of the paint job you get from these type of shops varies widely depending on the ability of the shop to hire and retained good painters. If you are going to let someone else paint your car you should take a look at their work before you let them start spraying paint.
Didge Aug 25th, 99, 8:57 AM chev-hell,
Where abouts in Ft. Worth do you live? I would like to look at your car and find out what you had done and at which maaco.

SSuper Dave Aug 25th, 99, 6:26 PM I have had 2 cars painted by Maaco and was happy with both. I did all bodywork and removed trim and bumpers from both, and tipped a little to get a good job. One was done in acrylic enamel and the other in Imron (this was a few years back.) Just look at a few that their painter has done to be sure he knows what he's doing. That would apply to ANY shop, though. I would not automatically rule them out on name alone.

Nice looking car. I took mine to a "reputable" shop just for bodywork and white sealer and I'm not too happy with it. I'm glad you were satisfied with yours.
I have had such bad experiences with bodywork that I'm going to try it myself this winter. So, good job or bad, I'll only have myself to blame. - Jeff

COPO Aug 26th, 99, 7:57 AM I can sure tell they didn't use much paint, because I see no colour, unless your shooting B&W film. Just kidding. Doesn't look bad but those roof stripes make it look like a Ford Rustang....Mark
Wes Colby Aug 26th, 99, 8:16 AM John, I think your ride looks killer based on the pics. From reading these posts, I suppose you feel really fortunate that it turned out so good. Sounds like several people had a nasty experience - ouch!
This has been said several times, but before you get her sprayed, you have to check out the shops' credibility and skill set.
Anyway, get that beast on the raod soon. There are too few good looking Chevelles on the streets today. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

69boo307 Aug 26th, 99, 9:02 AM I think the phrase 'you get what you pay for' applies very well to paint jobs. You pay $299 for a paint job, it's going to suck no matter where you got it done. My truck at home has over $1000 in paint alone, and it looks better than it did out of the factory.
the bottom line is the skill of the technicians and how much detail and paint you're willing to pay for. Doesn't matter what name the sign over the door has on it.
RagTop70 Aug 26th, 99, 2:03 PM Unless I'm mistaken, John wasn't trying to start a war over Maaco, he was just showing off his pride and joy. I bet he feels really good hearing about hood alignment, roof stripes (exactly where he wanted, so exactly where they should be), and, of course, how Maaco sucks. Come on guys let's hear it for John and his beautiful 70 Chevelle!

It looks great, I dont personaly like Maaco but looks like a good job. I think some of you guys need to remember no everyone can afford 6000.00 paint jobs. MY 69SS is going to Terry in Nashville you may have seen his work in Chevelle World I had to wait 14yrs to be able to afford this kind of paint job because I LOVE MY SS.

66 bowtie Aug 26th, 99, 3:53 PM I think it looks great, they painted my dads truck over the summer and didn't do a bad job. When my chevelle gets painted i might go to them but i will want to see it before it gets paint because on my dads truck there was overspray in the inner fenders and they didn't paint it back to black but that is just cause u have to specify i guess how good u want it. I have seen alot of good cars come out of the shop because my car is down the road from maaco

Shawn Aug 26th, 99, 4:12 PM Nice paint job!! I've never had a car painted before and I've been skeptical about Maaco but I have a '70 El Camino that's been painted over 3 times over the orginal Green Mist(dark green, red-orange, and now black) and the final one is'nt that good because of the quality of the old ones. The last one before the black was red-orange and there was too many coats put on and there is cracks in the paint. Since I am replacing the body and all the sheetmetal except the tailgate I'm not too concerned about the paint.

William Roche Aug 26th, 99, 6:27 PM John,
Don't worry about some of these negative responses because I received the same ones when I got my 72 painted at MAACO a few years ago from co-workers and friends. After four years, the 72 still looks good. I am even taking my 67 next month to MAACO to get painted. I think your car looks great and you should be proud of all the work and effort you have put into to maintain your Chevelle. It doesn't matter where you get your Chevelle painted, as long it looks good, and it looks Good. BTW, RagTop made a good point and I have to agree with him.

Looks like some of the guys are a little "green" because of your experience with
Maaco. I couldn't tell the color of the car by your pictures (although it looks like
either fathom blue or cortez silver). These are my two favorites. The 70 is also my
favorite year. Good luck with the car.

MIKE_D_67 Aug 27th, 99, 9:41 AM RAGTOP70,
Thank you for speaking my mind! I was thinking the exact same thing, but I hesitated to post a reply because I knew I would just get pissed off and start swearing.
I come to this site every day because the people here (most of them anyway) are extremely supportive and helpfull, but when I see someone who is obviously proud enough of his car to post pics to show everyone his pride and joy, and it gets picked apart! AAARRRGH!!
I thought this was Team FORD for a second!
Whew!...O.K. I feel better now.
P.S. chev-hell, the car, the paint, the stripes, and the hood all look great!
Mike
65ss Aug 27th, 99, 10:37 AM I don't really see here where anyone is putting Johns car dowm, sure there's a couple comments about the stripes and I asked whether they aligned the hood but whats wrong with that? Nobody is critizising John or his car and I for one see nothing wrong with relating good or bad experiences we've had with a particular shop! As I said you've got a nice looking car there John and I'm glad your happy with it!

I got my corvette painted at the Dover Delaware MAACO about 10 years ago, and the finish still looks great. Last month I got my Blazer painted at MAACO using urithane paint. It turned out real good. They took off all of the moldings, grill, spare tire carrier, etc. The paint job is great. My only complaint is that all of the screws, etc. were not put back when the car was reassembled. I would suggest doing the trim removal yourself prior to taking a car to MAACO to be painted.

JWagner Aug 28th, 99, 9:31 PM It sure looks great!!! I have some questions: How much of the prep did you so prior to taking it to Maaco? I had them paint a car for me about 15 years ago and had good results because I did a lot of block sanding and priming before I took it to them. How many types of paint were you offered? That is, how many levels of "quality" do they offer??

gibbons Aug 29th, 99, 12:11 PM My car is shown at members.aol.com/kengibbons/auto/index.htm (http://members.aol.com/kengibbons/auto/index.htm) . The body was done by my brother and it was painted by the owner of the shop. My brother has been doing body work there for almost 30 years. The JPEG doesn't do it justice, it looks like a red mirror. The paint (block sanding, prep, materials, no body work) are worth a little over $6000. At the three car shows we've been to (we brought home awards from all three), people walking aimlessly down the middle of endless rows of cars will divert to come look specifically at ours. The paint is that striking. By the way, the odds at winning at those shows were: 44 awards for 1100 cars, 35 for 500, and 105 for 425 (the easy one http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif)
One day I had it parked outside the shop and a guy wandered in asking if it was for sale. He started talking about the paint, saying he wanted the shop to paint one of his cars. He said he had done the body work. At that point, the owner told him they won't paint anything they don't do all the work on, because if the body work isn't perfect, the shop gets the blame. The guy got a little irate. Then he asked how much the paint on my car was worth. When I told him, he freaked. He said he painted houses, and he could paint one just as nicely for $500. I told him he was a lucky guy, because if he couldn't see the difference and was happy with anything, he could save a lot of money.
I'm not bragging about my car, just making a point that different people have different thresholds of what they consider acceptable paint jobs. I am sure the local Maaco guys do a lot more cars and make a ton more money than the shop where my brother works. But my brother has been cranking out quality for years and wouldn't settle for anything less than his personal best on each car. It makes a difference to me.
[This message has been edited by gibbons (edited 08-29-99).]
chev-hell Aug 29th, 99, 2:57 PM there was almost no bodywork to be done except to pull the trim/emblems and fill the holes, as for my personal preference, i buy and sell cars on the side and can tell a repaint a mile away and this is a good job not a show quality $6000 job (you'd be crazy to pay that for a daily driver) but it is excellent base/clear job and actually with the 2004r im puting in on Tuesday i will have $6000 total in the car so i think im sitting pretty good. jk
