How many lights is there supposed to be? I found one gray wire with no socket, put a socket on and found a spot on the right side but there has to be one for the driver side and if so what color is the wire, havn't seen any sockets or wires and can't find any pictures of the back side to see what it looks like.

There is only one light bulb in the '66-'67 heater control. The gray wire is correct.

I have it hooked up but it looks terrible it only lights up the right side the left side is dark, Ican't believe they left the factory like that!

The light is more intense on the right side but that one bulb still illuminates the left portion of the heater control too.
That lens is removable...and it's possible it's just dusty/dirty?
Also, are you using the correct bulb? IIRC, it supposed to be an 1895.

It is an 1895, brand new, just seems like there should be a light in or around the fan switch! How do you remove the lens?

How do you remove the lens?
You'll need to remove the heater control assembly from the dash, remove the 3 small chrome lever knobs (pull off gently), and unsnap the three flat clips that hold the lens to the control's metal frame.
If you look at it once the control is out, it's pretty obvious. Things get pretty dusty behind there.
A good time to paint the silver trim while the lens is off too.
If the lens' lettering is worn or the plastic clouded, repop lenses are available.

I had the same problem until I replaced the heater control this year. I purchased a rebuilt one from James Hinshaw. www.hinshawschevelle.com
You don't realize how much an old scratched and yellowed lens keeps out the light. after replacing mine with a new one it lights up like it should with the one bulb.
