It is finally time to return to 7.0 index racing, so I plan to put my old combo back together -- with a few changes..

Tell me what you think

454 bore 4.28 stroke 4.25 = 489ci 11.0:1 compression
Previous combo was a 454 bore 4.28 stroke 4 = 460ci
11.0:1 compression

Could stay 460 with 11.5:1 compression

GM 820 oval port heads 2.19/1.88 valves ported--same as before
New solid roller---going to have heads flowed and have cam matched to heads and combo
Old solid roller was 253/261 @.050 680 lift 108 comp cam
Professional Products Hurricane intake--same as before
AED 850 ho carb
1 3/4" headers
3" exhaust with flowmaster 50 series mufflers

79 camaro
3700 lbs
350 turbo trans
4.30 gear
28X9 slick (old combo used 26X10)
Old torque converter was a 4500 stall 9" transmission specialities
Probably will start with that, but may change if I need to...
Footbraking for now

Old combo ran 6.97et with a 1.49 60' time at 98-99mph with the mufflers
With dynomax bullets, it ran 6.92et.

Old suspension was stock, so I know I was losing some there.
New suspension is moroso trick springs, lakewood shocks, split mono leafs, rancho rear adjustable shocks, caltracs. It hooks now.

What do you guys think.

If you are wondering, I had to run the old combo hard to run the numbers. I want the new combo to be faster, so I dont have to run the engine so hard to make the 7.0et. Hence the 4.25 stroke (?) and custom cam.

Bottom line--I need about 6.70's....

Got a stock bore block in the floor, wanting to plan out the new one before it is built.

:(I was trying to run the 7.0 class with a 460 bbc roller-411 gears and 5200 stall with glide and went 7.14-It needed 456 gears for the square ports and 9.5 comp-I changed to a 489 and used the same everything and gained exactly 1.8 tenths:( still using the 411 gears-pumps gas-1.59 60 ft:boring: My next motor will use oval heads:D I use a trans brake also and leave around 4200 rpm's shift 6200! I hope your combo works out better than my did:D

I would like to hear what Footbraker and Wolfplace have to say.

I used to race the class. My old combo worked well and was very consistent. I am just looking for a little more power this time so that I dont have to work the motor as hard. Also I have the 350 turbo so I 60' good. I was always scared to run a glide for that reason.

I used a ported Dart intake with a modified 850 annular on a pretty similar set up. I like your old cam profile as well. You could increase your primary header tube a bit and replace the flow disasters with a better flowing muffler. Your car should run better with your changes. Nice combo

It is finally time to return to 7.0 index racing, so I plan to put my old combo back together -- with a few changes..

Tell me what you think

454 bore 4.28 stroke 4.25 = 489ci 11.0:1 compression...Not a fan of stroker BB in small tire/stoick suspension rides!:noway:

Previous combo was a 454 bore 4.28 stroke 4 = 460ci
11.0:1 compression

Could stay 460 with 11.5:1 compression...I would and bore it to 4.310!

GM 820 oval port heads 2.19/1.88 valves ported--same as before...Who did the porting/what exactly was done?

New solid roller---going to have heads flowed and have cam matched to heads and combo

Old solid roller was 253/261 @.050 680 lift 108 comp cam...duration @ .050 is in the ballpark but needs MORE lift and a tighter LSA. Duration @.200 is what matters!

Professional Products Hurricane intake--same as before... Chinese JUNK!

AED 850 ho carb...how is it jetted?

1 3/4" headers...made 700+HP and ran 10.11 @129+ with the same size primary tubes!!

3" exhaust with flowmaster 50 series mufflers...restrictive, big and heavy!

The best, relatively quiet, full size race muffler muffer is DynoMax's Race Magnum oval other wise for best ET/MPH regardless of db's Bullets!

79 camaro
3700 lbs
350 turbo trans
4.30 gear
28X9 slick (old combo used 26X10)

Old torque converter was a 4500 stall 9" transmission specialities
Probably will start with that, but may change if I need to...Wrong converter and Wrong company!!!

Footbraking for now...don't even think about transbake launches!:noway:

Old combo ran 6.97et with a 1.49 60' time at 98-99mph with the mufflers
With dynomax bullets, it ran 6.92et.

Old suspension was stock, so I know I was losing some there.
New suspension is moroso trick springs, lakewood shocks, split mono leafs, rancho rear adjustable shocks, caltracs. It hooks now but will it with more power/more converter?

What do you guys think.

If you are wondering, I had to run the old combo hard to run the numbers. I want the new combo to be faster, so I dont have to run the engine so hard to make the 7.0et. Hence the 4.25 stroke (?) and custom cam.

Bottom line--I need about 6.70's....easily done, shifting below 7000 RPM!

Got a stock bore block in the floor, wanting to plan out the new one before it is built.

Thanks ED.

It is actually cheaper for me to stay with the 4" stroke.

So lets talk cam--what do you recommend? Lunati? I dont have one, so I can get anything.

Converter--Is Charlie Plott at ATI who I need to speak with?

Heads--I could send you some pictures. I am going to have them flowed. I dont know how to describe the work done.

Mufflers--I have a set of 3" bullets ready to go on..

Yes--I can hook it--no problem there. But I have never had the power to carry the wheels 60' out!
