What has been your experience with the best way to "restore" (ie. Paint) a steering wheel - '64 Chevelle 300, Red interior, auto, no crack or heavy dirt - just needs the color restored.
Special paint used? Cleaning process?
THANKS!

I just finished doing mine...first i took all the chrome pieces off, then bead blasted with walnut shells, but that didn't work too good and it pitted the material a little bit, so I stopped doing that and I ended up sanding the whole thing down with something like 180 grit. I took all the paint off and i was down to the material the wheel is made out of, it was black in color. Then i took the wheel to my painter and he sprayed it black with two coats of clear and it looks great and should hold up real well. I'm not sure if they shot it with a primer first, but i do know they tried using a little body filler to fix some areas but the filler wouldn't stick, so there are a couple bad spots on the wheel.

I just started redoing a '64 wheel. I cleaned it first with TSP, then I carefully removed the 4 stainless trim rings and hand sanded everything. Final sanding with 400 and then primed it with PPG DP40 epoxy primer. A light sanding before the finish coat should be all that's required.

Any top coat color with a clear should work fine.

I just finished doing mine. Just sanded with 400, wiped with wax and grease remover and shot it with the same BC/CC that I used on the exterior. So far it loooks great except for a tiny bug that got stuck in the clear,my daughter named it Fred.
