How does a car respond to high total timing and low total timing? and does it help lowend or topend?

advancing the timing will help the low end and hurt the top end..the opposite is true of retarding the timing

Advance the timing too much and you'll get pinging. Retard it too much and the engine will run hot and get poor gas mileage.
